Another trip to Seattle (Dec 14 2003 09:50 GMT) - Monday to Tuesday I'm going down to Seattle for a quick visit with friends and colleagues at ICIS 2003 (International Conference of Information Systems). I will definitely meet Ram and Lasse, and hope to also see Lars Mathiasen, Lynne Markus, Kim Viborg Andersen, Sabine Hirt, and Rens & Helana Scheepers again. Maybe I'll even get to meet some people for the first time who I've known from their writing for years, like Sirkka Jarvenpaa who co-wrote the first paper on intranets that got me interested in that topic five or six years ago, and Peter Weill who has written extensively on information infrastructures, although from an angle almost directly opposite to mine. |

New film looks at racial discrimination in UK - Sify (Dec 14 2003 09:43 GMT) - "The burning issue of racial discrimination against Asians in the West and the slow but determined movement to secure the right to live peacefully in the adopted country forms the theme of the film `I Proud to be an Indian, slated to be released shortly ... The films aims to dispel the popular myth that the West was all about glamour and hitting big. The movie attempts to throw light on the dark side of the west."Seems like the recent mega-success of Bend It Like Beckham has inspired a new generation of Western-settled South Asian filmers. Other notable mentions in the category are American Desi, East Is East, Raat Chali Hay Jhoom Ke and Monsoon Wedding. |

Guide to the bad sex award - Business Standard (Dec 14 2003 09:42 GMT) - "Aniruddha Bahal, the investigative reporter of Tehelka fame, has won this year’s Bad Sex Prize for the sex scenes in his novel, Bunker 13 ... Literary Review founder and satirist Auberon Waugh created the Bad Sex in Fiction prize to be awarded annually to the novel that features the most 'inept, embarrassing and unnecessary' sex scenes, and the award winning passages have been truly mesmerising." |

Pakistan tried to bug the British HC - Daily Times (Dec 14 2003 09:42 GMT) - "According to a high-grade Western diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity, about six months ago the British high commissioner in Islamabad found a loose device hanging from the side of his desk. Not quite sure what it was, he sent for his security staff who declared it to be a 'bug' ... The Pakistan government has made no response to the British protest and the British government has done likewise. 'In my book, the two sides are even and should move on without chasing shadows,' the source said." |
