Editorial: 'Tis the Season for my Nemesis, the Nutcracker (Dec 14 2003 21:59 GMT) - As December rears its frosty Head and the mornings become Crisp and Brisk, necessitating an extra-thick Frock-Coat and a delightful variety of hot Toddies in the evening, the bowls in my Office are filled with one of my Favorite seasonal Treats: the noble Nut. In this respect, I am a Gourmand - walnuts, almonds, pecans, filbert, Brazil-nuts, and even roasted Chestnuts are like miniature Treasure-chests piled High, each with its small golden Nugget inside, waiting to be Unlocked. Ah, one of Life's small Pleasures. But the Key, alas, is rather a seasonal Menace: |

Woman says she is Thurmond's ... (Dec 14 2003 21:59 GMT) - Woman says she is Thurmond's mixed race daughter Essie Mae Washington-Williams, a 78-year old retired schoolteacher living in Los Angeles, says she is the late Sen. Strom Thurmond's mixed-race daughter. Thurmond, who died at 100 some months ago, was a staunch segrationist most of his life. There has for some time been rumours of him having a black, illegitimate daughter from his young years (and I wrote briefly about it some time back). Interestingly, while Thurmond never publicly acknowledged his daughter, which would have been a likely political suicide, she says she was economically taken care of through the years. |

Nokia's Content Syndication Program (Dec 14 2003 21:58 GMT) - Wow! After bitching about how Microsoft had enough clue to include an RSS feed of their mobile developer info and the rest of the mobile manufacturers and carriers didn't, Rafe clued me in in my comments to Nokia's Content Syndication Program. All I have to say is *wow*. All of Nokia's documents, announcements and toolkits are available via a bunch of different RSS feeds, or in one uber-feed. Though I think Nokia has a relatively nice developer site, it can be hard to find what you're looking for or keep up with their announcements. |

Mobile Download Managers (Dec 14 2003 21:58 GMT) - Anil linked to PalmOne's new Addit app which I think is awesome. It allows you to view and choose from a list of PalmApps, which you can then download and run immediately or "Over The Air"/OTA. This is an awesome step for the Palm platform, which up until now has always assumed that you would have a PC available to install applications. Though I wonder how scalable/updateable they are, I like the non-latency and immediacy download-manager apps like this give the mobile user. Sure you can approximate this sort of experience via WAP or XHTML-MP (WAP2), but until the mobile networks are a little faster and the processors on the phones a little more powerful, the lag is just too much for most users. |

Windows Mobile UI Tutorial (Dec 14 2003 21:58 GMT) - I just ran into this MSDN article which shows how to create "native" looking forms in Visual Studio for "Windows Mobile 2003 Powered Smartphones." And via Dominic, A full .Net Compact development tutorial with info on data storage, XML and more. There's a lot to learn from these tutorials if you know nothing at all about their dev environment (like me) in terms of understanding how Microsoft is going to pitch this type of development to corporations and the general capabilities and limitations of the technology (you can just *see* User Interface nightmares in the making). It should be interesting to see how Microsoft progresses with this stuff. |

Half-shekel: for the sake of the unity of the whole House of Israel (Dec 14 2003 21:57 GMT) - Exodus 30 records the commandment of the half-shekel. Each person over the age of twenty is to give exactly half a shekel of silver to the service of the Temple. The rich shall not give more and the poor shall not give less. As every person makes an equal contribution, this commandment fosters a society in which all feel equal: no one is better or worse than his fellows. |

'Miserable Failure' Google Bomb Sets Liberal Geeks In Collective Glee (Dec 14 2003 21:55 GMT) - Parents' basements around the country resounded with squeals of glee as the Guinness Book of World's Records committee declared the left wing bloggers' "Miserable Failure Google Bomb" the World's Greatest Circle Jerk. The stunt, which exploits the popular search engine's automated algorithms, causes the official Whitehouse website to display as the top search result when the aforementioned words are typed in Google's submission box. Google prioritizes search results by the sheer number of hyperlinks using a particular set of words, and many Bush-hating bloggers took the time to post this link as many times as possible on their web sites to skew the results.
