Thoughts on Sports (Dec 14 2003 23:28 GMT) - (1) Is there anyone in Yankeeland who is genuinely upset that we replaced Pettitte and Clemens with Kevin Brown and Javier Vasquez? Vasquez consistently has ERAs in the low 3s, which will translate into about 18 wins a year in the south Bronx. When healthy Brown is among the top 10 pitchers in baseball, and all signs point towards a healthy year coming up. I certainly prefer Gary Sheffield to Juan Rivera in rightfield, Bernie Williams to Nick Johnson at DH, and Kenny Loften to Soriano at leadoff. Moreover we'll have a host of strong arms to get to Rivera in the 9th. |

What does "triage" mean in the making of wine? (Dec 14 2003 23:27 GMT) - "Triage" means approximately the same thing in winemaking as it does in treating injured people. In an emergency room, the staff performs quick evaluations of new patients as they come in, so those in dire need of care can get attention more quickly than those with less urgent need. In winemaking, triage also has to do with rapid evaluation -- this time, of grapes. |
