You don't listen to me (Dec 15 2003 01:59 GMT) - Today's Arlo 'n Janis is on the familiar theme of husbands not listening to their wives.I get particularly deaf during the holidays and this week even my daughter said to my wife, "Dad doesn't listen."I'm generally okay when the subject and tone are serious. But when it involves instructions or miscellaneous descriptions or upcoming appointments or most any kind of social chatter and the setting is mundane -- house or car -- then I'm bad, amazing even myself. My wife's pretty tolerant, unless I'm running a deficit in our emotional bank account. |

Keep rollin', rollin' rollin'... (Dec 15 2003 01:57 GMT) - Act like you've been there, Tyrone. Oops, nevermind. It wasn't pretty, whether you're talking about Tyrone Poole celebrating a TD at the 10 yard line and getting tackled short of the goalline, or the weather that made things messy and uncomfortable at Foxboro. Regardless, the Patriots (12-2) rolled to their tenth straight victory, a 27-13 win over the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars at Gillette Stadium.Knowing the weather would become a factor in the second half, the offense opened it up in the fist half, and the Patriots scored a touchdown on their opening possession for the first time all season, as Tom Brady found a wide open Daniel Graham (look Ma, hands! |

Dean to offer a foreign policy (Dec 15 2003 01:57 GMT) - No mention in the article of the impact of Saddam's capture on Dean's campaign, so my guess is that his address won't have quite the same impact in a post-saddam-capture era, but Slate's William Saletan answers "No!" to his own rhetorical question, Is How |

Micronations: folly and grandeur (Dec 15 2003 01:53 GMT) - A conversation this weekend got me to thinking about this old Wired article from March 2000, "It's Good to Be King." The piece is about obsessives who create "countries" by declaring their bedrooms or homes to be sovereign states, and then start issuing passports, attracting adherents, and generally ruling. Just re-read it, and it's as striking as it was when I first found it three years ago:... ... ... |

Helpline Comment (24751) (Dec 15 2003 01:53 GMT) - Well I bumped the memory up on my 486 to 24 megs of ram & it functioned alot better with '98SE. With 16 megs I could click on an icon & it would take the program about 5 seconds to open up. I am not going to try to run the internet on this machine as I know it would be slow, but as it is it is usable. I can click on an icon now & it immediately starts to open. |

Santa Scam (Dec 15 2003 01:52 GMT) - Santa ScamSo as usual, my 8-year-old son has me on my toes. I talked to his dad today and found out that my son told him he still believes in Santa, but meanwhile, he flat out told me that there is no such thing as Santa. I hated to let the fiction die, to be sure, but my kid was fairly vehement about it 2 weeks ago over a serious cup of hot chocolate. So today I learn, Jackson seems to be keeping the news that there is no real guy named Santa from his dad for some reason. Doesn't want to disillusion the old man I guess. |
