17 Dead in Attack near Baghdad Police Station (Dec 15 2003 02:35 GMT) - Still some bad news coming out of Iraq: Just 12 hours after Saddam Hussein was captured, a car bomb exploded Sunday outside the police station in this town 60 miles west of Baghdad, and military officials said at least 17 people had been killed and 33 wounded. It was the deadliest attack on American-led forces since two police stations near Baghdad were hit with car bombs three weeks ago.... |

When The "It" Car Becomes Not so Cool (Dec 15 2003 02:34 GMT) - The New York Times has a great article about the PT Cruiser's (and to some extent the VW Beetle's) sales sharply falling off."Sales of the PT Cruiser, once the most sought-after car on the market, dropped 25 percent this year, despite a new turbocharged version that has been praised by reviewers. Three years ago, buyers were willing to pay as much as $10,000 over the PT' |

Most of these articles were published in Probe magazine, which I missed out on. The writing is somewhat dry, so I read a bit at a time from this book. |

Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation : The End of Slavery in America (Dec 15 2003 02:31 GMT) - Guelzo is one of the consistently original and inspiring of American historians. His Redeemer President is far and away the best intellectual biography of Abraham Lincoln. His forthcoming book on the emancipation proclamation, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America, which I have just read in galleys is an equally brilliant elucidation and defense of a document that Richard Hofstader once dismissed as having all the poetry of a bill of lading. As Guelzo poetically repl ... |

Reelecting Lincoln : The Battle for the 1864 Presidency (Dec 15 2003 02:31 GMT) - Im eagerly awaiting the articles and posts that will explain why the capture of Saddam isnt necessarily good news for President Bush. Im told that the BBC has already been heard from, contending that with Saddam in custody, Bush will come under more intense pressure to withdraw from Iraq. Right. And the fall of Atlanta was good news for George McClellan. |

The Athenian Trireme : The History and Reconstruction of an Ancient Greek Warship (Dec 15 2003 02:31 GMT) - Sprinkled with holy water and to a fanfare of trumpets from a white-helmeted naval brass band, a newly built, 17-metre-long Minoan-style open rowing vessel slid sweetly down the slipway in Hania's old Venetian harbour at noon on December 1. President Costis Stephanopoulos had cut the blue-and-white ribbon tying her up, broken a bottle of champagne and announced her name, Minoa. Read the rest in Athens News. Left Behind deconstructed (Dec 15 2003 02:30 GMT) - "Left Behind" is an immensely popular science fiction series about the sinners left behind on earth after good Christians are swept up in the rapture. Over at Slacktivist, a blogger has been dissecting the book in two- and three-page chunks, tearing apart the assumptions, fallacies and curiously compelling heresies in the story. ... Charlie Stross and I just finished "Appeals Court," the sequel to Jury Service, which Argosy magazine will publish bound together in January, in a fix-up novel called "Rapture of the Nerds." "Appeals Court" is, in part, a response to "Left Behind": |

Trying Saddam (Dec 15 2003 02:29 GMT) - Midwest Conservative Journal: I find it savagely ironic that (1) people who claimed that Saddam Hussein was no threat to any other countries now think other countries should have a part in his trial, (2) people who want Iraqis to run their own affairs right now don't want them to run this trial and, (3) people actually think that the UN should try him for the crimes it consistently refused to do anything about. I love it when I find those rare political comments that are this distilled. |
