Shoe Plant Gives Big Holiday Bonuses (Dec 15 2003 07:59 GMT) - Workers at a shoe plant were feeling more than a little tickled when they got their Christmas bonuses that, for some, totaled nearly $20,000. Instead of receiving typical end-of-year frozen turkeys, the 200 employees of the SAS Shoemakers plant here were handed envelopes when they were called together Friday afternoon. |

More On Magnatune (Dec 15 2003 07:57 GMT) - Had a real nice phone call with John Buckman, the owner of Magnatune tonight regarding my various concerns expressed in this blog entry. I probably can't remember everything we talked about, but I now know that Magnatune is trying very enthusiastically to promote itself and the artists on the label, hence the 50/50 split and the 5 year deal. The 50/50 split is both philisophical (ie. it's a partnership between label and artist) and to cover costs. The 5 year deal is mostly to make sure that when Magnatune prints up compilations and merchandise that the artists don't yank permission away from them, rendering all of that stuff worthless. |

A Second Chance for Democracy? (Dec 15 2003 07:56 GMT) - Hillary Clinton introduced a bill called the Protecting American Democracy Act last week, which is similar in thrust to Rush Holt's bill to require a voter-verified paper trail for the new computerized voting systems, but with perhaps a better chance of making it through. Especially if you write your Senators and tell them to support it. Tom Tomorrow's Halloween comic on Diebold... |

Wolfie = dumbass... or loose cannon (Dec 15 2003 07:55 GMT) - TIME mag. piece on Wolfowitz's stupid memo about limiting reconstruction contracts to war supporters (though non-supporting nations can still be subcontractors), timed perfectly to shoot the State Dept. in the nads as they go to some of these excluded nations to ask for debt forgiveness for Iraq. The author makes the point that the administration could have just given contracts to whomever it wanted, without beating France and Germany publicly over the head with their exclusion. It sounds similar to something Dean said this week... |

From one prison to another (Dec 15 2003 07:55 GMT) - According to DEBKA, Saddam Hussein seems to have been held captive for the $25 million ransom, and while DEBKA is part of the Israeli propaganda machine, they are often quite well-informed, so it wouldn't surprise me a bit.
