The Pudding Knight (Dec 15 2003 16:59 GMT) - I liked J.P. Carter's literary allusion in this post about "Saddam's third act." "If there is a pistol on the wall in the first act,“ said Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, “it will be fired by the third act." In the first act of the Iraqi war, Saddam Hussein portrayed himself as a “valiant knight leading the Arabs into battle against the infidel. |

Move over, Martha (Dec 15 2003 16:58 GMT) - It's crummy days like today when I start to get excited about next year's garden. I'm not even kidding. The Philadelphia region is in zone 6 for hardiness, which means I should start planting the garden in April. What the really means is that in February and March I'll start seeds indoors. And what does that really, really mean? |

The real cost of offshore outsourcing [Julian Bond] (Dec 15 2003 16:56 GMT) - The real cost of offshore outsourcing : THERE APPEARS to be a general assumption that dramatic savings can be made by sending software development to countries where IT salaries are 10% or 20% of similar IT professionals in the USA or Europe. That assumption is quite invalid according to those who have tried it, in fact they claim that savings rarely reach 30% and it can take years before even that level of savings materialise. According to them, a multitude of other costs, beyond the obvious cost of salaries, are often forgotten when considering sending work offshore. |

Helpline Comment (24755) (Dec 15 2003 16:55 GMT) - yes more memory helps any win-doze run better and faster. win 3.1/dos seems to have a bump ar 64megs- cannot seem to see more than that or it muight be a function of the chiopset ( p300 ,illegal via chipset pcchips m571) but with 386 and 486's even some early pentiums the chipset may limit the amout of ram that will be used. also 98lite may help make older and slower systems work better. it has several different levels and the fastest uses parts of 95 to slim down the os even more. |

The 'hole' story (Dec 15 2003 16:54 GMT) - According to an account from Major Bryan Reed, an operations officer for the US army's 4th infantry division, in an exchange before he was pulled from the hole in the ground he was sheltering in, the former dictator said to US troops in English: "My name is Saddam Hussein. I am the president of Iraq and I want to negotiate." US special forces replied "regards from President Bush".... |
