A Time of Waiting (Dec 15 2003 23:38 GMT) - Dorothy Day Advent is a time of waiting, of expectation, of silence. Waiting for our Lord to be born. A pregnant woman is so happy, so content. She lives in such a garment of silence, and it is as though she were listening to hear the stir of life within her. One always hears that stirring compared to the rustling of a bird in the hand. |

No Sense of Gratitude (Dec 15 2003 23:34 GMT) - I just saw Lou Dobbs on CNN complaining that with the Iraqi people there is no sense of gratitude, rather almost a sense of entitlement towards the Americans who have come in and liberated their country. I think I have come up with an analogy that may make this a little bit easier to understand. Rotterdam (Dec 15 2003 23:34 GMT) - I was predisposed to like Rotterdam sight unseen, on historical grounds. Rotterdam had been utterly destroyed in the Second World War, just like my own hometown of Warsaw, and had to be rebuilt from the ground up after hostilities ended. Unlike Warsaw, however, the job hadn't been done by Stalinists, and this had to be a good thing. Say what you will about the Germans, but when they set out to level an urban center, they don't cut corners. The city was flattened by an air raid at the very outset of the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. |
