Microsoft-SAP Battle (Dec 16 2003 01:46 GMT)

- News.com writes about the war for the IT infrastructure for small businesses between the two former partners: When it entered the software niche known as enterprise resource planning (ERP) two years ago through a series of acquisitions, Microsoft made a pledge that it would steer clear of longtime partners SAP, PeopleSoft and Siebel Systems. The giant said that instead of selling its wares to the world's largest corporations as SAP and its traditional rivals do, it would target a largely untapped market: millions of small and medium-size businesses.

Jim Hoagland: 'People are . . . saying the sons died like men and he gave up like a coward' (Dec 16 2003 01:46 GMT)

- Saddam Hussein's ignominious surrender captured the essence of his quarter-century of misrule over Iraq: He was exposed as a blustering fraud who robbed his people to line his own pockets and to satisfy his monumental vanity. In the end he could not escape his own personality or the pursuing U.S. Army.

Guest Opinion: ID cards curb freedom (Dec 16 2003 01:46 GMT)

- Since 9/11, some Americans have urged establishing new methods of social surveillance and control. Technobusiness and police/intelligence interests say we need a national identity card to "stop terrorism" and "protect freedom."

Arizona Daily Star: Opinion

A hopeful day (Dec 16 2003 01:46 GMT)

- But as many analysts warned Sunday, Saddam Hussein's capture does not mean the end of violence in Iraq. It does not mean U.S. troops can feel more secure in a land in which one or two Americans are killed almost daily. And it does not mean the United States has accomplished its goals in Iraq, though the end of the Saddam Hussein era is, of course, a major step forward.

Letters (Dec 16 2003 01:46 GMT)

- I am from the Northeast, and I think Arizona is getting a bum rap in regards to the trash along the sides of the road. There is almost as much trash along the sides of the road in other parts of the country, but they have brush (a lot of poison ivy), grass, fallen leaves and snow each year to cover it up.
