Challenges for Writers of Children's Science Books (Dec 16 2003 20:59 GMT) - Wordy1 writes "A story by the NY Times (registration required) discusses the challenges of writing children's books about science. While scientific accuracy is important, sometimes it can conflict with the need to make a book enticing or at least accessible. What's more, the way scientific matters change as time and technology race on reduces the likelihood for longevity of children's books about science. Lisa Von Drasek, a children's librarian at the Bank Street College of Education in Manhattan, points to the constant weeding out of outdated children's science books from school library collections. She says, "You don't want a book sitting on your shelf that says, 'Some day, man will walk on the Moon,'" Despite all these challenges, authors amp; |

Raw Nerve (Dec 16 2003 20:58 GMT) - I love single malt scotch so when I saw that an author I love, Iain Banks, was to write a non-fiction book about scotch I waited impatiently for it to arrive at the posti. Sadly, Raw Spirit: In Search of the Perfect Dram is possibly one of the most disappointing books I have ever awaited anxiously for publication. You would think that a terrific author and scotch drinker approached by a publisher to do what any scotch drinker only dreams of, to drive around scotland drinking scotch and writing about it, would be a winning combination but you'd be wrong. He mentions rather frequently the envy of his friends as he writes which gets rather annoying after a while. |

Blogger News Item (Dec 16 2003 20:58 GMT) - I kinda had a feeling the conservative hounds were attacking us this weekend for not saying enough, or cheering hard enough about Saddam's capture. They sure are good about telling us what we ought to be talking about. That kind of bitching match is way too boring for me to get interested in, but I did harbor a few twinges of that ever-faithful Catholic guilt about my own silence this weekend. Since I just read World O'Crap's stirring defense of how the lefty blogs did indeed respond, I thought this might be a good time to explain myself. |
