Intel caves on Itanium (Dec 16 2003 21:59 GMT) - The Register reports that intel is caving on the "year of itanium": A few gallons of rancid egg nog were poured this week all over the "Year of Itanium" celebration underway at Intel, as an analyst firm predicted Intel will not only give in and ship a x86-64bit chip but also that the product will be woefully behind in the market. ... "Our research suggests Itanium is in for a rough ride," Whittington writes in a recent research note. "Intel is now saying it will "go with the market" on 64-bit x86, thus is destined to unveil one when they think the market will ripen, which we judge as mid-2004 for volume delivery in 2005. |

Seven dirty words or any combination thereof (Dec 16 2003 21:59 GMT) - Fang-Face writes "The First Amendment Center has an article about banning six of George Carlin's dirty words, and one substitution. In place of using the word XXXs (mammaries), the bill proposes to outlaw the anglo-saxon basic word for the anus instead. Either as a complete word or in a hyphenated or disjointed sequence. The language of the bill is here, including the specific words being banned by fiat. So we may yet see a world with Seven (Or More) Words You Cannot Say On Television. |

SMS and RSS (Dec 16 2003 21:58 GMT) - BTW, a little known feature of ZIM SMS Chat is that it supports RSS! You can subscribe to an RSS feed, and have new items posted to the feed automatically sent to your cell phone when you're not at your computer.  SMS messages are limited to 160 characters, so if the RSS item is longer than that, it gets broken up into multiple messages. The first message includes the feed name and the item name, subsequent messages just include the feed name and a counter. Because some people post huge weblog entries, I max out at 5 messages per RSS item. |

Saddam Captured; Bush Screwup Team Kicks Into High Gear (Dec 16 2003 21:57 GMT) - One day after U.S. forces apprehended former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, President Bush's trusted screwup team is already hard at work, trying to figure out how to turn this spectacular success into some kind of public scandal or embarrassment, sources say. "This is one of the most challenging situations the screwup team has ever faced," says Willard Crispin, a member of the team. "Saddam was captured in a well-organized military operation. |
