on friendorati and blogroll metadata (Dec 17 2003 13:59 GMT) - the xhtml friends network looks like an intriguing complement to foaf : interestingly, the authors dream of creating a "friendorati" service : if xfn were to see any significant adoption, i'm sure that this would be fairly trivial for dave to fold into technorati . i know it's early, but at this point it would seem that xfn is going to suffer due to a lack of tool support [hopefully this will change ], but more importantly, i'm not sure how useful it is to try to force a rela... |

Use JAX-RPC Service Implementations and Endpoint Interfaces In Some Package (Dec 17 2003 13:58 GMT) - We found a little bug in our recently released JAX-RPC Extension for JDeveloper 10g Preview whereby you'll get a NullPointerException if you try to publish services whose implementation and service endpoint interface lack a package name. While in JDK 1.3 it was still possible to have classes and interfaces in unnamed packages, with JDK 1.4 it is greatly discouraged (if not a compiler warning, I forget), so sticking to web service implementation classes and their companion service endpoint interfaces which live in some package is only following best practice anyway. |

Throttling down, part 2 (Dec 17 2003 13:58 GMT) - Here's how I'm going to handle apps that request changes.xml too often. The rule is that you may access changes.xml no more than three times an hour. Once your three requests have been processed, you'll get a 503 Service Unavailable response, until the top of the next hour when you get another three requests. |

WTC Tower Designed Completed (Dec 17 2003 13:56 GMT) - In time for Governor George Pataki's deadline, WTC master planner Daniel Libeskind and WTC tower architect David Childs have come to a compromise in the design of the WTC tower: The tower will both have an assymetrical spire (Libeskind) AND a wind farm (Childs), "1,500 feet tall — 1,100 feet enclosed and 400 feet open — with a 276-foot spire to claim the symbolic height, and an antenna reaching beyond that, perhaps to 2,000 feet." Childs reduced his planned tower by 276 feet. The Times notes the press release hints at their relationship, calling the tower an "idea" from Libeskind, "given form" by Childs (po–tay– |

This Offseason's Julio Zuleta Moment (Dec 17 2003 13:55 GMT) - The Sox quietly acquired Mark Bellhorn from the Rockies on Tuesday. Don't count Bellhorn out of the second base mix. I know that he had an awful 2003 campaign and that nearly every prospect or utility man looks good by the light of the Hot Stove, but keep this in mind: Bellhorn had a higher OPS (.886) than Alfonso Soriano in 2002. |

The Bitter End (Dec 17 2003 13:55 GMT) - I can't seem to stop thinking about phrase origins. Here's another one that sent me scurrying off to the internet. "To the bitter end" This is thought to be a nautical expression describing the end of a cable attached to the "bit". The Oxford English Dictionary provides this citation, "1867 Smyth Sailor's Word-bk. 103 A ship is 'brought up to a bitter' when the cable is allowed to run out to that stop. |

Blogger News Item (Dec 17 2003 13:55 GMT) - Daddy, Where Does Knowledge Come From?. Along with hermeneutics (the philosophy of interpretation), related questions of epistomology (the philosophy of knowledge and knowing things) continue to intrigue me. When we start to talk about filters through which one approaches the Bible, some of those are epistomological. |
