Category conflicts (Dec 18 2003 05:57 GMT) - So this is what happens when you have 2 bloggers in the same house. I wanted to respond to Chris Winters' post on having babies. Julie and I were discussing that this was going to be a fun post to write, until it came to the topic of which category the post was going to go in. She says "family", which I don't (yet) have a category for, but I don't regularly post on family issues, so I'm resisting creating a category. But maybe she's right -- after all, this post could go under "family". |

Domainlets and Active Directory Resource Domains (Dec 18 2003 05:55 GMT) - We have an archival and imaging solution vendor, who is pretty strict about supported and non-supported environments. If we are in a non-supported environment, they will walk away from most upgrade and of course any failover situations. The goal of a recent project was to implement clustering to improve fault tolerance in a NT4 domain environment. After much pre-planning with vendor at the eleventh hour the vendor insisted we either implement the cluster in native Windows 2000 domain or inside a domainlet. Customer-Owned Networks (Dec 18 2003 05:54 GMT) - Lawrence Lessing argues that "when customers own the network, everyone wins." Why should government be in the business of providing high-speed networks? Isn't that what free markets are for? Haven't we all learned that the market is more efficient at supplying goods and services? Do we really need to rediscover the failings of Karl Marx at 100 megabits per second? |

Microsoft Offers New Computer Owners Security Advice... (Dec 18 2003 05:53 GMT) - Microsoft Offers New Computer Owners Security Advice [Windows Informant] '-- Microsoft's current Windows version apparently is unable to secure users out of the box, so the company is resorting to public-service announcements on its Web site to tell users how to secure new PC systems they might receive during the holidays. "With a few simple precautions, PCs can be better protected from computer viruses and other online hazards," the Microsoft Web site states. "Why should users take safety precautions with a new PC? Because they won't have a secured connection to the Internet unless the new PC has a firewall enabled, is up-to-date using Windows Update, and includes fully updated antivirus software." --' ... |
