He calls her "Pimple Popper, M.D. |

Today's movie: The Rules of Attraction (Dec 18 2003 23:35 GMT) - Bret Easton Ellis writes novels that focus on the charismatic sociopath searching for an emotional connection. His first book, Less Than Zero, was a blast when I read it, like a much more real version of the movie crap Hollywood was putting out in the mid-'80s. But his stories work much better on the page than on the screen and The Rules of Attraction is no exception.Roger Avary (Killing Zoe) writes and directs, trying to make something artful and eclectic out of something that doesn't really have a plot; in fact, he's going to have an even more difficult time with Ellis' recent novel Glamorama, which he's making now. |

Brown V. Board of Education: A Civil Rights Milestone and Its Troubled Legacy (Dec 18 2003 23:32 GMT) - In case you haven't noticed by the increase in posts this morning alone, I'm finished with exams. Let me write that one more time -- it feels so good:I'm finished with exams!Only one more round of those, then the big one (the bar exam), and I'm a working man, free from the bondage of our country's educational system for the first time in twenty-some-odd years.Expect the bigger and better around here as I try to get this little slice of my world off the ground. |

When Pride Still Mattered : A Life Of Vince Lombardi (Dec 18 2003 23:32 GMT) - Guardian of our liberties does it againBy Tom SmithI have not read the Campaign Finance Case Opinions and do not plan to. If I can spare the time to read 60,000 words by (largely the law clerks to) second class minds struggling with a mess made by Congress, I think I'd rather spend the time reading, oh, gosh, I don't know, maybe this excellent biography of Vince Lombardi. Reading the New York Times on the decision was bad enough. They noted the swing vote was cast by our favorite cowgirl, San ... |

Swastika the Earliest Known Symbol and its Migrations (Dec 18 2003 23:32 GMT) - Swastika Prompts Microsoft Font RecallMicrosoft has announced the recall of the Bookshelf Symbol 7 font due to the inclusion of a swastika. The poster of a similar article at Metafilter asks if it is really all that offensive. I often find the use of the character offensive, but the character itself..? We've been over this ground before here and elsewhere, but the whole symbol vs. meaning debate is one which type aficionados are deeply aware. |

Public Intellectuals: A Study of Decline (Dec 18 2003 23:32 GMT) - The Universal GeniusThere are those who believe lawyers are "universal geniuses," that they know how to think and so, given facts about anything they can come to a correct decision about it. Most of those folks are lawyers, of course (including, legend from my Constitutional History class has it, Thomas Jefferson). This attitude may explain a lot of the problems with lawyers today, as well as why lawyers are so hated. It certainly explains this blog, which is made up of all lawyers (bar one o ... |

The Sorrows of Young Werther (Dec 18 2003 23:32 GMT) - Some things are just plain wrong. Such as the fact that the entire first page of Google's search results for "pourquoi me reveiller" - which is a very beautiful, very sad aria from Jules Massenet's opera "Werther", which in turn is based on Goethe's "Leiden des jungen Werther", which talks about Weltschmerz a lot, and which prompted a wave of suicides back in the late Seventeenhundreds - yes, the entire first page of search results, and no, I didn't have the heart to keep looking further, anyway ... |
