Diebold wins again Since there's ... (Dec 18 2003 23:23 GMT) - Diebold wins again Since there's nothing in the rules for the Business Idiocy of the Week award that prevents repeat winning, it once again goes to Diebold, maker of fine dubious electronic voting machines. Following their first victory, this enterprise maintained winning ways in the quest for this coveted award by peddling unaudited software in California, thus coming to the edge of losing sales rights in the most lucrative state. Further, they were caught red-handed planning to pad prices on paper output features, for those jurisdictions already locked into their products but deciding they might just want an audit trail. Well done! |

Scent of an Oak (Roble de Olor) (Dec 18 2003 23:22 GMT) - Film Reviews: Vet documaker Rigoberto Lopez's first feature "Scent of an Oak" is a notably lavish and ambitious Cuban production in the politicized tradition of mainstream Cuban filmmaking. Awkwardly mannered treatment of the tragic history of a utopian experiment is artistically below the great work of past generations of Cuban filmmakers. |

New Boys (Dec 18 2003 23:22 GMT) - Film Reviews: Fourth installment in David MacDougall's "Doon School Chronicles," about an exclusive boarding school in Northern India, focuses on the arrival and adjustment of 12-year-old boys living away from home for the first time. A legacy of colonialism, the school is a training ground for India's elite. Pic could be slotted into public TV curriculum. |

Mask: A Field Report on Masked Performance (Dec 18 2003 23:22 GMT) - Film Reviews: Ethnological filmmakers travel to rural village of Xiaotun to document Guan Suo Opera, a folk-art pageant indigenous to the town. Opera performed for centuries provides case study of turning a traditional quasi-religious art form into an ephemeral cultural commodity. Tedious and somewhat recherche for general or even "Discovery"-type auds. |

The Return of the Khan (Der Kahn kehrt zurueck) (Dec 18 2003 23:22 GMT) - Film Reviews: Story of the return of political scientist Rangin Dadfar Spanta to Afghanistan following 25 years of living in exile in Germany reps a timely inquiry into a topical subject: difficult attempts of a nation to evolve from warlord rule to democracy. Pic offers an indelible snapshot of post-Taliban life that should be welcomed in docu lineups far and wide. |

Journeyings and Conversations (Kaya Poochhe Maya Se) (Dec 18 2003 23:22 GMT) - Film Reviews: Bound for Sundance after its international premiere, collage film reps old-school, verite-style filmmaking, well intentioned but ultimately flatly executed. It ends up like an arty Discovery Channel docu, but without any structuring narrative. Lack of shape will keep its coach from making whistle stops at all but a few upscale fests' stations. |

Jerusalem, My Love (Jerusalem, Min Elskede) (Dec 18 2003 23:22 GMT) - Film Reviews: This year's docfest featured a number of provocative features set in and around Israel-Palestine but none quite as oblique or peculiar as doc-maker Jeppe Ronde's highly personal essay. Pic's ambitious scope and emotive subject should help it to bless more fests, though theatrical prospects will require serious leaps of faith from distribs. |

Indian Fish in American Waters (Dec 18 2003 23:22 GMT) - Film Reviews: The familiar theme of the wide cultural abyss between Indians who are FOBs (fresh off the boat) and American born provides the premise for frosh scripter-helmer Manish Gupta's amiable if undistinguished romantic comedy. May head out to cable waters, and do especially swimmingly in Indian markets. |

Flashback (Dec 18 2003 23:22 GMT) - Film Reviews: A Latvian documentarian's "All That Jazz," Herz Frank's meditation on his life and art, with his open-heart surgery the showstopper, can be as annoyingly self-indulgent as it is sporadically brilliant. Unlikely to wow many audiences, but docu may well send cineastes scrambling back to archives to see more of the maestro's past works. |

Fondement ? |
