Farmer Gets Life for Killing Neighbor (Dec 19 2003 15:59 GMT) - A farmer was sentenced to life in prison Friday for killing his neighbor over a disputed piece of land, then dumping the body in a well and covering it up with hay bales. Rodney Heemstra, 44, was convicted of murder in October, admitting that he shot his 52-year-old neighbor, Tom Lyon. Heemstra claimed it was in self-defense. |

Open source firm releases patch for IE spoofing flaw (Dec 19 2003 15:57 GMT) - An open source and freeware software development web site has released a patch to fix the URL spoofing vulnerability in Internet Explorer, which can be exploited by scammers who try to trick people into revealing details of online banking accounts or other private information. Openwares.org, a Vaunatian company, with branches in Israel, the US and France, released the patch and the source code for the same a couple of days back. The company has also set up two pages where users can test to see if they are vulnerable to the exploit, one a fake Microsoft Update example and the other an example of a fake PayPal site. |

Windows XP update moves ahead (Dec 19 2003 15:57 GMT) - The beta version of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, issued late Wednesday, is available now for download through BetaPlace, Microsoft's site for registered beta testers. Microsoft is expected to offer it later through the download section of its MSDN developer site and on CD. As previously reported, changes in SP2 are focused on security. The update includes a reworked firewall component, now dubbed Windows Firewall, that will be turned on by default to protect PCs from outside threats. |

He's genetically engineered a common cold virus to attack cancerous cells and leave healthy ones intact. Having lost a few loved ones to cancer, this is amazing news.
