Soft News-Diane Sawyer interview with Bush (Dec 21 2003 01:59 GMT) - If there was once a time when Diane Sawyer was a serious journalist—and for the sake of argument, let us say there was—it is officially over, as Tuesday night's interview with President Bush showed. |

Tales from the Primary Trail: Year End Highlights (Dec 21 2003 01:59 GMT) - We are heading into crunch time on the Primary Trail - the final weeks and days before the voters have their say to determine who wins this stage of the Democratic Primary race. So before the candidates make their final, desperate turn for the finish line, it's time to reflect and indulge in that annual journalistic tradition of reporting again what already has happened (aka the year-end wrap up story). |

The Return of the King (Dec 21 2003 01:53 GMT) - Well, I finally got to see it. In short? It was worth the wait. Not just the two years since Fellowship, but the fifty years since the books were published. Words really can't do it justice. |

Helpline Comment (24803) (Dec 21 2003 01:51 GMT) - Hi all, I'm not looking for a bootable SCSI drive, I just want it as a bulk storage unit for holding stuff to be accessed from other machines through the LAN, documents, stored files, that sort of thing. I was a bit put out by the heat generated by the Micropolis. It looks like I'll have to situate it in another machine to maximise air-flow. The non detection of the drive may be a SCSI BIOS problem, I'll try it again someday... It's a formidable looking card, full length and with another card stuck onto it with big ceramic things in betwen like huge mains insulators. |

http://archive. scripting. com/2003/12/20#When:7: (Dec 21 2003 01:48 GMT) - Saw two presidential campaigns today: Clark (in Derry, NH) and Gephardt (Manchester). I asked Clark a question, to see if he had an idea that money might not be such a big issue in this election and future elections. This is an idea Lessig tried to explain in his Lydon interview, and that I've been saying over and over. Now Jeff Jarvis has echoed the idea via Jay Rosen -- the campaigns, while they use the Internet, are one-way not two-way. |

Vishal's Picture Gallery (Dec 21 2003 01:47 GMT) - Click here to go to Vishal's Picture Gallery! I update it regularly. There are lots of pictures organized in different albums that I clicked while living in San Francisco, Raleigh and Minneapolis and also during our cross-country trip from San Francisco to Raleigh, NC and then to Minneapolis, MN. Believe me they were a lot of miles and my poor 1992 Dodge Spirit took us through with no problems except for a tire burst in Sacremento, CA, which was ugly. |

Songs (Dec 21 2003 01:47 GMT) - I evidently need to learn to sing "Santa, Baby". witchofrock was egging me on to sing it to Darkside. I don't know it. I can sing along with it; my background enables me to sing along to things that I've never heard before by the second time around, and get quite a bit of it right -- but soloing, I don't do well. |

Ensuring Single Application Instance (Dec 21 2003 01:44 GMT) - I was recently working with a local software development house that was completing a new release of their application. During a meeting with their development manager they had a rather unique question. They wanted to ensure that only a single copy of their application was running at any time. They hadnt been able to figure out a simple way to accomplish this. |

Holidays (Dec 21 2003 01:42 GMT) - Stanley Kurtz wrote yesterday about the decline of Christmas and I saw an interesting thought in there: Evangelicals cherish Christmas, but dislike Halloween. On the other hand, secular Manhattan seems increasingly to be turning Halloween dress up into a major adult holiday. There's a cultural divide here. That's part of why I dislike Halloween. |
