Race blind society? I wish (Dec 21 2003 06:58 GMT) - Every study of the job market or the housing market I have ever seen confirms the existence of persistent and blatant discrimination against African-Americans. This latest study by the Discrimination Research Center is no different, unfortunately. Temporary employment agencies in California show significant preference for white applicants by 3-1 over African Americans In undercover tests conducted by the Discrimination Research Center (DRC). By ratios of 4-1 in Los Angeles and more than 2-1 in San Francisco, agencies favored white job applicants over slightly higher qualified African American applicants. "African Americans seeking temporary work received less consideration in the form of fewer offers and less desirable jobs," said John Trasviñ |

Flying Updates (Dec 21 2003 06:53 GMT) - I just realized that I've been remiss in updating my flying blog. I hadn't touched it at all during the month of December. After spending a bit of quality time with my log book and re-reading some of the recent club e-mail, I've added about five new entries. They cover everything from my DG-1000 checkout (and loops) to some scenic flying on the Wright Brother's 100th Anniversary earlier this week (pictures). It's been a good month of flying so... |

B-52 runways in Vietnam to carry tourists next year (Dec 21 2003 06:52 GMT) - Officials in central Vietnam say a former military airport at Cam Ranh Bay will be redeveloped to handle international tourists. Work will start early next year on upgrading the existing two 4,000 metre runways that were used by American B-52 bombers during the Vietnam War. The Chairman of the Khanh Hoa provincial People's Committee says the new airport is expected to be operational in August 2004 for domestic flights and will receive international flights around the end of 2005. The U-S built naval and air base at Cam Ranh Bay which was later leased to Russia is 60 kilometres north of the resort beaches at Nha Trang that last year attracted nearly 600-thousand tourists, 150-thousand from overseas. |

strange things are afoot at the circle m (Dec 21 2003 06:50 GMT) - i rather enjoy disecting and studying the design of things. logotypes, furniture, architecture and packaging all fascinate me in this way i can't describe. when i see something that strikes my fancy i normally whip out my digicam and snap a couple shots - but of course most bloggers do. however while filling up my memory card i often find the pictures i take are focused more on the shapes involved in an object rather than the object as a whole. several weeks back i was riding the red line out to universal city to visit megs. |
