Still Coasting On My Trip To The Theater (Dec 21 2003 18:58 GMT) - Before ROTK I saw a preview for a time-travel movie, and I started thinking about the common time-travel trope that attempting to change the past will invariably make the present worse. Isn't this effectively the view that we inhabit the best of all possible worlds? And what does this say about our ability to make choices in the present? Why is it that the decision we make with no foreknowledge is always better than the alternatives? Answer: |

New Blog Design (Dec 21 2003 18:57 GMT) - Please let me know what you think of the new design and in particular what problems, if any, you may be experiencing with it. The best resolution to view this seem to be 1024x768 but 800x600 looks fair. Anyone using a browser other than IE6 let me know how the site appears. I have used Avant, and Mozilla as well as IE6 and the only problem seems to be with an out of place blogroll with Mozilla. Thanks for all visitors, have a great Christmas season, and remember, tell your friends to... |

More WMD Talks Going On (Dec 21 2003 18:57 GMT) - Here's an interesting read on the behind the scenes action that appears to have resulted in the Libyan decision to abandon their WMD programs: BRITAIN is in secret negotiations with at least two more ‘pariah states’ believed to harbour weapons of mass destruction, in a bid to encourage them to give up their arsenals peacefully or face the wrath of the international community. Amid the fallout from the dramatic announcement that Libya is to abandon its illicit weapons programme, it... |

French Fight Islamist Extremism (Dec 21 2003 18:57 GMT) - The French have finally joined the war on terror, in their own way: If French secularism really is threatened by Muslim separatism, the scarf ban hardly addresses the root cause. We'd point instead to French statism and welfarism (ditto for Germany) that have discouraged job creation and often leave immigrants huddled in slums on the outskirts of French cities. That economic separatism is a far larger barrier to assimilation than head scarves. One illiberal act begets another. |

Are RFID Dangers Vastly Overhyped? (Dec 21 2003 18:57 GMT) - After the announcements that Wal-Mart or the U.S. Department of Defense are going to put radio frequency identification (RFID) tags almost everywhere, many articles in the press raised alarm signals about this new technology. In "RFID security scares ignore facts," META Group analysts write that we all should understand RFID technology before debating whether or not its usage is putting our privacy in danger. [Note: |

Himalayan kingdom goes mobile (Dec 21 2003 18:57 GMT) - The mountainous Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is getting to grips with its first mobile phone network, according to the BBC. An ancient Buddhist ritual was recently performed in Bhutan, a land of tradition, to celebrate the launch of a most contemporary service. Proud workers from Bhutan Telecom joined dignitaries to watch the country take its first steps into the mobile age. Bhutan is a country where technology plays second fiddle to nature. Change happens at a glacial rate, but now at least it can proudly claim a small stake in the communications revolution. |

I only got a few things. Trash bags, a trash can, pizza cutter, hand towels, stuff like that. I also got one of those folding camping chairs, like I had in Chicago. |
