The Day They Died (Dec 21 2003 23:18 GMT) - TV Reviews: With a body count to beat "The Sopranos" and enough post mortem deduction to impress the staff of "CSI," the History Channel cashes in on viewer's fascination of all things morbid with a fairly sensational special that isn't above showing sloshing buckets of blood. This is trivia geek heaven with tantalizing gory details thrown in for fun. |

Dreamkeeper (Dec 21 2003 23:18 GMT) - TV Reviews: While perhaps a dicey commercial proposition from the get-go, relegating this handsome project to a barren ratings wasteland is perplexing. However hokey and predictable it is, "Dreamkeeper" is also a lyrical, visually splendid and lavishly produced two-parter in keeping with Robert Halmi Sr.'s filmography. |

Argosy Magazine reborn (Dec 21 2003 23:17 GMT) - Argosy Magazine got a nice write-up in the Birmingham News. Charlie Stross and I just turned in a novella for the next ish of Argosy, a sequel to Jury Service, called "Appeals Court." All-RSS-within-one-click finder (Dec 21 2003 23:17 GMT) - I wrote a Python script that downloads a web page, then examines all linked pages to try to find their RSS feeds. (Of course, it uses Mark Pilgrim's RSS finder to do the actual finding.) This is good if you have an HTML-format blogroll and you want to know the RSS feeds for all the linked blogs. Sorta like what Dave Winer did with the weblog neighborhood tool, except that it looks for links in the HTML rather than in XML dumps from aggregator subscription lists, and consequently it finds feeds for things people link to rather than things they read. To run, you need Python, Mark's rssfinder. |

Mary Seacole the "black Florence Nightingale" (Dec 21 2003 23:16 GMT) - My day has been deranged by the discovery, which I made at about 4 pm, that Simon Schama's televised History of Britain has been shown and is still being shown continuously on UK History (one of the free digital channels) throughout the day, from 7 am until 1 am tomorrow morning. China arrests another web writer (Dec 21 2003 23:16 GMT) - The Chinese government has arrested yet another web writer for publishing pro-democracy articles. Separately, a dissident sentenced last month for similar crimes has been refused an appeal. Kong Youping, a 48-year-old factory worker in Anshan city in north-eastern Liaoning province, was taken away on December 13, the group said. Beijing's high court had also declined to allow dissident He Depu to lodge an appeal against a November 6 ruling, which sentenced him to eight years in... |
