Jon Johansen won A Norwegian ... (Dec 22 2003 13:40 GMT) - Jon Johansen won A Norwegian appeals court has upheld the earlier acquittal of "DVD" Jon Lech Johansen (picture), who was charged with his role in breaking the DVD distribution encryption and spreading the DeCSS code on the Net. The case can still be appealed to the Supreme Court, which in theory can overturn lower court decisions on technicalities. For all intents and purposes, as far as I understand, this decision is final, and it is a complete victory for Jon Lech Johansen. |

All I Want for Christmas... (Dec 22 2003 13:39 GMT) - I finally felt "well" enough over the weekend to focus on getting some Christmas decorating done at last, along with making it a Lord of the Rings trilogy marathon weekend. Friday night we watched the extended version of the Fellowship of the Ring, Saturday afternoon we watched the extended version of The Two Towers, and yesterday we went to see Return of the King. It was quite simply wonderful. I need to see it a second time to fully process it and write up my thoughts on it - it was amazing! While we were waiting in the HUGE line for the movie (and we got there almost an hour early! |

the politics of bloc voting (Dec 22 2003 13:35 GMT) - The political mobilization of the Muslim community in America is meant not simply to get American Muslims involved in the political process but to build a Muslim voting bloc. Block voting is the natural strategy of a minority group seeking to advance its interests in the political sphere. It depends on the fact that in a close race, a small group can decide the winner. Muslims need to get educated about bloc voting because it seems that a lot of people, including those in leadership positions in the community, are not clear on how it works. Bloc voting is not something a community does just to show that it can. |

Mass High Tech Biomed Rounds: Small companies step up to the plate in large trials (Dec 22 2003 13:34 GMT) - "A half-dozen years ago it appeared that bioinformatics companies would take care of the data explosion. You know, big computers crunching large numbers in the hope that quick -- or quicker -- answers would be returned following an outsourcing of expensive software solutions. But come to find out bioinformatics has not emerged as a dynamic space. The reason is that a fledging flock of geeks can never know enough about a client's science to make their software services worthwhile." |

Canberra bashing still common? (Dec 22 2003 13:33 GMT) - I'm planning to go to the PM's XI in January, so I did a google search for "Manuka Oval" looking for a seating plan. I came across this article as well, which is written by a Melbourne journalist coming to Canberra to watch the AFL. I probably shouldn't let this stuff annoy me, but when the only insults he can come up with are that pornography is legal, there are a few politicians here, and that it's cold (this from a Melbournite), it makes me wonder whether the perception of Canberra as a city has changed at all. I grew up in Canberra and I know that there is more to the place than people generally think. Having travelled around the world a bit, you usually get a blank look when you say you're from Canberra, as a lot of people think that Sydney's the capital. |

Is Canturf immoral? (Dec 22 2003 13:33 GMT) - I have recently arrived back in Canberra after a stint overseas, so I've been rediscovering the area by going on a few long drives. One thing that leapt out at me and screamed "stupid" were the Canturf plantations, if that's the proper term. There's one near Fyshwick and one on the way to Bungendore. Whilst not being massive operations, the sight of a big irrigation sprinkler standing over a field of green grass is slightly sickening to my mind. Is there really still a market for selling pre-grown lawn? |
