December 22, 2003 (Dec 22 2003 23:41 GMT) - I've been sanity-checking FogBUGZ for Unix by installing various OSes under VMware. Easiest Linux to install: RedHat 9. Mandrake is not bad but still uses some jargon that makes it not quite ready for prime time, for example, you would not be able to get through setup without knowing what "root" means. SuSE went to a lot of trouble to create a good setup, then they go out of their way to make it difficult and slow to install if you don't pay them for disks... |

Auto-Cascade & Auto-Zoom 1.2 (Dec 22 2003 23:41 GMT) - This script automatically cascades folder windows to their parent folder window as they are opened in the Finder. It also zooms the folder window to its smallest possible size while still showing all possible contents and window title. Fully commented in script editor. |

Move (or Don't!) 1.2 (Dec 22 2003 23:41 GMT) - Invaluable for TouchPad users! If you want to keep a folder's window from inadvertently moving from its current location, this is the script for you! Whenever you try to move the window of a folder that this script is attached to, a dialog will ask if you really meant to move it. If the dialog is ignored, it will close itself and move the window back to where it was. Fully commented in Script Editor. |

The Internet: Kiss of death for Namath's rep? (Dec 22 2003 23:41 GMT) - Last night, just a little while after posting the audio clip of Joe's famous indecent proposal, I was discussing the ways in which things have changed over the last 10 years. Remember when you didn't have a cellie, didn't read e-mail at your desk all day, and had never seen the Internet? It's amazing to think how much different life was back then. I mean, if your friend told you he was going to meet you at the bar, you pretty much had to take it on faith that he was going to show up and risk being stranded without a wingman. These days, all you've got to do is blow up his cellie and track him down. |

big sweaty, hairy ones (Dec 22 2003 23:40 GMT) - great. yet another patent awarded that locks out competition. while it doesn't exactly affect blockbuster's method for dvd rentals, as far as i can tell, it definitely will affect their game freedom pass and, much more impotant to me, gamefly.com. simply put, this just sucks. |

Rocket Scientists and Computer Change? (Dec 22 2003 23:39 GMT) - The computer press loves to write about it when Microsoft loses business to other computer companies and/or movements. On the other hand, ask yourself why no one has written about Morton Thiokol lately. They just changed computer systems for their engineers. They exhaustively compared systems. Their findings would make a good article in Business 2. |

Not All Venture Money Chasing Me Too Plays (Dec 22 2003 23:39 GMT) - While conventional wisdom is that venture capital moves in a sheep-like herd, all investing in similar "hot" space, not all deals fit those criteria. The latest venture capital study of VC investments in 2003 turned up a number of investments that are considered "odd", in that they're certainly not in areas where you see VCs shoving each other aside to get in on the deal. This includes the makers of "hybrid" metal/wood baseball bats and a company that makes energy efficient traffic lights, with security cameras hidden inside. Of course, if you look at the numbers of these deals, they all tend to be pretty small bets, so you have to wonder if there's something more to the deal. The article also doesn't identify who the VC was who invested in these deals - and my guess is that they're not done by any of the bigger name VCs, but rather smaller niche market VCs. |
