Nobody dies for free OR Greed - An American Tradition (Dec 22 2003 23:19 GMT) - There is little doubt this post will be met with some controversy, but I really think that it is something a lot of people feel but are afraid to say. Tonight is the deadline for the families of the victims of 9-11 to file a 'claim' with the government. In an effort to spare the airlines, the government has offered what amounts to an average of $1.8 million, tax-free, to eligible families. While I originally bristled at at this, I resigned myself to the fact that the plan itself was not a bad idea. |

The 8bits of Christmas (Dec 22 2003 23:18 GMT) - BEST THING EVER! THE 8BITS OF CHRISTMAS! Christmas songs played on 8-bit PCs and game systems. My favorite is Let it Snow, on the Gameboy. You can then scroll down on that page to descend into "chiptune" madness. |

The deadly sin of gluttony (Dec 22 2003 23:15 GMT) - More from the Times.... It is a curious fact that no man likes to call himself a glutton, and yet each of us has in him a trace of gluttony, potential or actual. I cannot believe that there exists a single coherent human being who will not confess, at le |

Nietzsche for beginners (Dec 22 2003 23:15 GMT) - I lunched today with our Great Leader Perry, and one of the things he mentioned was how he doesn't care for ploughing through the collected works of the Great Philosophers (something to do with preferring simply to find out "the truth"), and prefers instead to read and I can't remember the exact phrase he used, but the one I use in such circumstances is 'Bluffers Guide'. I share Perry's tastes in this matter. However,... |

Man Who Fought Polar Bear Wins Carnegie (Dec 22 2003 23:15 GMT) - A Canadian man was one of 15 people awarded a Carnegie Medal on Monday for an act seemingly pulled straight from the tall tales of the American frontier. Dr. Eric Fortier, 34, used a pocket knife to attack a polar bear on Canada's Baffin Island, just south of the Arctic Circle, to save two friends who were being mauled. |
