How now, mad American cow? (Dec 24 2003 10:58 GMT) - Bigvegan reports that mad cow disease has been identified in the USA. Some would choose "acknowledged" over "identified", and those same "some" would probably question the news release showing up during Christmas week, when newspaper front pages are typically busy with pictures of air traffic controllers saying Santa's clear for landing. As for myself, I'm just going to link to the Canadian rendition of the story, and recall the time last May when BSE was found in Canada and every country in the world shut their borders to Canadian beef imports, at a cost of $11 million a day. The next little while will be interesting... Of course, the cow's brain has only tested positive twice, and they'll have to wait until England verifies BSE before it's official. |

Only the clever will survive, as per usual (Dec 24 2003 10:58 GMT) - I love repeating myself. I take a story and slap the same basic commentary on it again and again, and in a way, that makes me feel like a boy band, although my hair just isn't quite at that level. The story of the day is from inobgirl, and it's one of those cow escapes slaughterhouse and gets to spend life at a sanctuary ones. Once again, I'll point out that once again we're saving the cleverest animals, which, if these sanctuaries could just get the budget to support breeding, will inevitably lead to a generation of animal overlords. On to new business now, doesn't it look like our side got horribly screwed on this deal? |

Dynamite, cars join the responsible hunter's arsenal (Dec 24 2003 10:58 GMT) - Rosemary notes that the RSPCA is somewhat troubled over an upcoming wild boar and wild cat hunt to be taking place in Australia. Wanna know why? "Organisers say it does not matter how the animals are killed. 'You can get them anyhow you like, with dynamite or you can run them over,' said the event's organiser Rod Haines." Tell me again about how responsible hunters are. |

Dogfighter dies trying to kill dog (Dec 24 2003 10:58 GMT) - Annak and Aspifox sent this story in before we left, but I'm in a nostalgic mood today, so let's party like it's Thursday before last, shall we? An Arkansas man and his son drowned while the son was trying to kill the family pit bull, who apparently was too old to fight anymore. As it turns out, the dog still had some fight left in him (or her), because the dog's still alive and well. I don't have a lot of sympathy for dogfighters, but I sure have a lot of respect for karma. The story's here. |

Meet Britt Atack, leader of the Screamin' Vegans! (Dec 24 2003 10:58 GMT) - Oh man, it's 10 to three and I still haven't posted anything today. So lazy... I need to be more active, I should do some sports, or maybe think about sports, or maybe just read submissions about sports, like the one that Rosemary sent in. Wow, what a rough intro. I'm out of practice. |

pydiction (Dec 24 2003 10:57 GMT) - Some developers in Propylon will probably be interested in pydiction for the VIM editor. As an Emacs bigot, I will have to pass. BTW, what's with the 22/7 rating? PI in the sky? |

Re: Radio on Mac crashing (Dec 24 2003 10:56 GMT) - Lawrence, Thanks for the hint. I tried it but no luck in the long term. I managed to get half an hour last night out of RU before it crashed. This morning it runs for about 2 minutes and then crashes. The last change I made to my system was upgrading to Panther and that was several weeks ago. |
