Nothing To See Here... (Dec 24 2003 18:59 GMT) - Commercially available sattelite photos of the White House have been blurred at the request of the secret service so as to obscure objects on the roof and of private courtyards. I don't see a huge civil liberties issue here (I don't even see a small one), but I gotta... |

All that activity meant good news for antivirus software companies, such as Symantec. It was bad news for organizations of all kinds, which expended precious resources disinfecting everything from desktop workstations, to airline reservation systems and automated teller machine (ATM) networks that were hobbled by virus outbreaks. |

The Beginning of the End (Dec 24 2003 18:58 GMT) - I'm not sure what this means, but Microsoft is dumping Intel and switching processors in its next-generation Xbox. Apparently, Microsoft wanted to get in on the action, although most think the company is simply picking the PowerPC platform. This means the end of people turning hacked Xboxes into cheap Linux computers — something Microsoft detests. Now we can turn them into cheap Macs, I guess! |

Microsoft RealNetworks' Suit Is Only the Latest 'Bundling' Accusation (Dec 24 2003 18:58 GMT) - Legal experts say the most recent lawsuit filed against Microsoft indicates that the software giant's legal troubles are not necessarily over despite its accommodation with the Bush administration and its settlement of several other suits. The $1 billion lawsuit filed late Thursday by RealNetworks, which makes software for playing audio and video over the Internet, cites new evidence suggesting that Microsoft's business practices have remained unchanged after its court battle with the U.S. government. |

Stop Christmas-Gift PCs From Feeding Worms (Dec 24 2003 18:57 GMT) - Slashdot | Stop Christmas-Gift PCs From Feeding Worms. An Anonymous Reader writes "If you recently set up a new PC with Windows XP, or if you had the pleasure to do a 'reinstall from scratch,' you probably found that many XP systems as they are shipped today are not patched against common issues like Blaster. Given that these worms are still going strong, it doesn't take long for a new system to be infected. In particular, if you have to connect it to the Internet to download all the patches. Well, help is in sight. |
