An Ambitious Recipe (Dec 25 2003 22:59 GMT) - update It's good. I burned the first batch of onions, garlic and ginger, but I put in a bit of white wine vinegar and it added a smoky flavor that nicely complements the peppers. I'm about to make a dish with the misleadingly-simple name "Pork with Peppers and Potatoes" from "The Food of India". It's got 26 ingredients and I'm only skipping one, a "pinch of asafoetida" — a pungent, sulfurous spice that can be used in place of garlic and onion if it's well-fried. |

Boy From Ghana Loses Deportation Fight (Dec 25 2003 22:51 GMT) - A boy from Ghana who was detained by the government for three years after he arrived alone and almost penniless in the United States has lost his battle to stay here. A federal appeals court refused earlier this month to reconsider a ruling that clears the way for Julian Yeboah, now age 13, to be deported at any time. |

Steel Battalion News: We Have A Heartbeat! (Dec 25 2003 22:48 GMT) - Wooo boy, that was fun. To everyone who wondered where the hell we've been the past few weeks, thanks for waiting and hanging in there. Bruce recently moved to another area, which, as is typical for such an operation, resulted in all manner of havoc. Suffice to say, the end result was that the servers weren't hooked up to the new lines like they were supposed to be, and SBC ended up going down. Now, as a convenient Christmas present, we're back online and better than ever With a vastly improved level of bandwith at our disposal, expect better site performance and additional content for the future. |

Steven Mikulan at LA Weekly ... (Dec 25 2003 22:44 GMT) - Steven Mikulan at LA Weekly - Coffee, Tea or Handcuffs? - another homeland gestapo story that makes you want to make good use of the local lamp posts. I sent the following letter to the editor: [claire] Steven Mikulan's "Open City" column for December 19-25, entitled "Coffee, Tea or Handcuffs" told the story of Sue Smethurst's mistreatment by America's new Gestapo. I have just a few words for the DHS goons responsible. |
