Earthquake in Iran (Dec 26 2003 23:59 GMT) - I'm staying with a bunch of Iranians and I showed them news of a killer quake in Iran. They quickly read the reports (Jeff Jarvis' Buzz Machine points to the best) and they said that where the quake happened is the poorest area -- many people there live in simple shacks. I see President Bush has offered our assistance. You know, in the old days we wouldn't care about what happens around the world, but today I have many friends on IM in Iran. I wish them all well and hope they and their families are all doing OK. |

XHTML Friends Network (Dec 26 2003 23:58 GMT) - After SXSW earlier this year, I posted that Tantek wanted a way to add meaning to blogrolls, something with less complexity than FOAF. Apparently he and others have been churning away at this idea since then, and the resulting specification is called XHTML Friends Network (XFM). It's refreshingly simple. P.S. |

Just a quick question, out ... (Dec 26 2003 23:57 GMT) - Just a quick question, out of curiosity:Does anyone here know any forms of Sing Language other than ASL?I remember that, in my first semester of studying American Sign Language, I found it interesting to learn that ASL and Bristish Sign Language were vastly different (I suppose I assumed that since the two countries have nearly identical spoken/written languages, they would have similar signed languages).I was just wondering. |

Indy Jones (Dec 26 2003 23:56 GMT) - We watched the third Indiana Jones movie tonight, the one with Sean Connery. This movie was so much better than the middle one, the overly-gory Temple of doom with its obnoxious kid sidekick. The first really could stand all on its own and be a great thing, though. The sequels were just profit-taking. |

Joyriding ambulance thief jailed (Dec 26 2003 23:55 GMT) - The British sure do call their violations by strange names. Aggravated vehicle taking.. hehe! Doorbells (Dec 26 2003 23:55 GMT) - NYTimes: "American soldiers found in an adjacent area various bomb-making materials, including a doorbell, a common device used for detonating roadside bombs, Major Nagl said." Huh? Maybe PATRIOT II needs to start banning doorbells in our homes too? It's amazing that a newspaper that publishes insightful articles like Krugman's column today and can also unquestioningly regurgitate interesting quotes like this!... |

Outgunned (Dec 26 2003 23:55 GMT) - Ariel Natan Pasko argues Israel is outgunned: As long as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Fatah elements, al-Qaida, and other extremists want to destroy Israel; as long as Iran, Syria, Egypt and Libya continue their own WMD programs; as long as the balance of forces favors Israel's enemies, Israel needs to continue to build up its own non-conventional weapons capabilities and be prepared to use them. Israel has a moral obligation; |

Busy news day You know ... (Dec 26 2003 23:53 GMT) - Busy news day You know there has been a horrible day in the world when both a targeted killing and a new suicide bombing in Israel gets buried. Indeed the day after Christmas was a bloody one, with at least 20,000 being killed in an earthquake in Iran, a gas leak accident killing 200 in China and a deadly plane crash in Benin taking at least 113 lives. |

Getting Mad Cow in Perspective (Dec 26 2003 23:50 GMT) - Steve Bainbridge puts the Mad Cow story in perspective (and deals a little criticism Slate's way while he's at it). I would add another point that seems to be lost in the news rush on this whole affair: when comparing... |
