Iran Earthquake (Dec 26 2003 18:59 GMT) - The ancient city of Bam, a 2000 year-old complex (take that, Hearst Castle), was shaken by two earthquakes, today. Both quakes measured at about the same level as the recent SoCal quake, yet managed to wreak havoc something fierce. The historical part (linked above) has been completely destroyed, causing between 5,000 and 20,000 fatalities, depending on who is reporting. So far Russia and Germany have offered to send personnel and aid to the region, the UNOCHA has dispatched a team for initial assessments. |

Those Darn Neocons (Dec 26 2003 18:55 GMT) - The Dutch media are starting to really enjoy the term neocon as well. It's already making front page articles, such as a recent edition of the NRC. So, who are these neocons? Supporters of Bush, gloating after the capture of Saddam. Enthused by it to distract from the WMD questions that the same neocons already tried to cover up with humanitary arguments after they weren't found. |
