Tom's Hardware End of Year CPU Roundup (Dec 26 2003 23:49 GMT) - The end of the year is a great time to buy new equipment, whether for tax purposes or simply to buy something for yourself that you really want. Most geek wish lists include hard drives, graphics cards and processors. [Tom's Hardware] '-- The AMD Athlon64 FX and Intel's Pentium 4 Extreme Edition are still status symbols for the computing jet set. After all, you can pick up a complete and high-performance system for between $750 and $1,000, which as our benchmarks show, also offer a superior price/performance ratio. --' ... |

Iraq: Quicksand & Blood (Dec 26 2003 23:46 GMT) - George W. Bush and his top advisers learned little from the Vietnam debacle of the ‘60s, since most avoided service in the war. But many top Bush aides played key roles in the repression of leftist peasant uprisings in Central America in the ‘80s, a set of lessons the Bush administration is now trying to apply to the violent resistance in Iraq. |

A Merry Marxy Christmas (Dec 26 2003 23:46 GMT) - A specter has been haunting Marxism —the specter of Christianity. Routed politically by capitalist globalism, and hard-pressed to identify any really existing hope, some prominent Marxists have turned to Christianity for inspiration and revision. Terry Eagleton has reclaimed his Catholic past, and now exhorts his comrades to read theology. Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri have invoked St. |

Recall Fever Spreads South (Dec 26 2003 23:46 GMT) - For the third time in less than three years, Venezuela President Hugo Chávez faces ouster, this time through a recall election made possible by the constitution drafted under his administration. The National Electoral Council (NEC) will announce in January whether oppositional forces were successful in collecting the 2 million-plus signatures needed to hold a recall. The NEC also will report whether Chávez supporters were successful in gathering the requisite... |

(Dec 26 2003 23:45 GMT) - From the NY Times, Three Stars of 'Seinfeld' Boycott a DVD Deal (though this article is already out of date, read also: A 'Seinfeld' Star Will Do the DVD but Asks for Pay). I am excited that Seinfeld is coming out on DVD, though I have often wondered why it has taken this long. This quote from a SVP tells us why: "It's never been just about the episodes; |

Helpline Comment (24873) (Dec 26 2003 23:42 GMT) - Aaron Does that drive have an overlay on it? The overlay wouldn't be seen unless it was the boot drive, and it would probably have to be configured for the other drives. Also, most Western Digital drives use no jumper for single drive and the jumper goes in the master postition only if there is a slave present. Tee Fred |

Post xmas blow out! (Dec 26 2003 23:41 GMT) - Another task on the 1001 Day Project knocked off. #51: Buy a games console. In an excessive act of post xmas consumerism I went out and bought a satin silver PS2 and a big stack o' games. (Review and commentary to follow) It's been pretty quiet on the DVD viewing front. |

Gould and Factor Analysis (Dec 26 2003 23:40 GMT) - A common claim is that "Gould used factor analysis to debunk the existence of g ."
