Cross-Process Critical Sections (Dec 27 2003 12:54 GMT) - It is often thought that to implement cross-process synchronization on a Windows OS you need to use a kernel object such as a mutex which involves a switch to kernel mode, and back to user mode, everytime the lock is acquired and released; in contrast to a critical section which does not incur the overhead of the mode switch if there is no contention for the lock but which can only be used within a process. But, in fact, it is quite possible implement a critical section-like object which works cross-process, the key to this being the use of shared memory. Jeffrey Richter describes just such an object in this article in MSDN Magazine January 1998. This COptex class also contains a configurable spin lock implementation for use on multi-processor systems. |

Eggnog without fear (Dec 27 2003 12:54 GMT) - [NY Times, registration required] What impressed me the most about this recipe and Amanda Hesser's accompanying article was the lack of dietary paranoia, specifically, the absence of the nanny-like fussing over the public health menace of raw egg whites or yolks that usually accompanies eggnog recipes. I reckon traditional eggnog to be safer than driving, for healthy adults, anyway. |

Dutch Rail proceeds with chipcard (Dec 27 2003 12:53 GMT) - Todays Financieele Dagblad contains an article about the introduction of the chipcard for the Dutch Railways. Apparently the contract with TLS has been modified to get NS to participate in the chipcard deal. Most likely the price of rail tickets will vary more specifically, based upon the time-slot in which the train-trip occurs. |

Western Farmers Turn to Selling Water (Dec 27 2003 12:46 GMT) - Ron Aschermann could barely eke out a living raising melons, cucumbers, tomatoes or other crops on his 300-acre farm. But quitting the business will earn him more than $1.2 million. Aschermann and scores of others farmers on the high plains of southeastern Colorado are selling water, which once produced melons, to the Denver suburb of Aurora. |
