What's with the symbols on your banner. Is it some kind of sick joke? (Dec 27 2003 19:56 GMT) - Naw, I'm not the Discordian type. These symbols represent the union of three positive forces in my life; they reflect my sensibilities as a spiritual person, an intellectual, and a champion of capitalism and freedom. The Pentacle. The Pentacle has been around for thousands of years, but achieved its Western prominence by way of Pythagorean religious practice. |

Patriot Act II signed partly into law - stealthily (Dec 27 2003 19:53 GMT) - On December 13, the day we dragged a deranged and very filthy former dictator and all-around evil shitball out a hole in the ground, President Bush signed into law that paper that takes away more civil liberties, and political freedoms, than its predecessor, Patriot II. Signing the act on Dec. 13 is a good idea, actually, if you're about to waste a large amount of the freedoms Americans enjoy. The capture of another guy in recent history who didn't like it when his subordinates had too many freedoms, consigns the whole deal to a mere footnote in the news, somewhere. Hooray for Dubya, he giveth you $300, he taketh your Constitutional Rights. |

Christmas Come & Gone (Dec 27 2003 19:53 GMT) - Spent the holiday up in Vermont, as usual, combining some relaxing family time with a couple days of work. virtual housekeeping meets aspirational consumption (Dec 27 2003 19:52 GMT) - Like a lot of people, I suspect, I use my Amazon Wish List less as a begging bowl than as a long-term parking lot for stuff I might want to buy someday. After adding a few new items yesterday, I realized that the list had swelled to over 125 items over six wooly pages in the past three or four years. That seemed wrong for some reason, so I went through it this morning ruthlessly deleting stuff I already had, didn't want, or--in a number of cases--have absolutely no recollection of ever adding (A Botany Coloring Book?).The only reason I mention it is that it felt a lot like cleaning out the basement or a big closet--there's all this stuff you've accumulated that gives away all the caprices, fads, and passing fancies to which your head has turned over the years. |

Blogger News Item (Dec 27 2003 19:48 GMT) - "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." Jimmy Stewart, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence", Apparently, the veneer of civilization is pretty thin....,Quoted from John Ford's exceptional movie. John Ford was able to call upon the greatest actors of the times to direct a social commentary on the maturing process of the United States not since accomplished by any other director. Where there somebody available to do this same type of movie today? |
