The Real Killers A week ... (Dec 29 2003 22:47 GMT) - The Real Killers A week ago, we had a 6.5 quake in California, which killed two people. As you likely already know, that was followed by a 6.7 quake (2x absolute magnitude) in Iran that shattered the historic city of Bam. As of the CNN update that I watched with this morning's coffee, the death toll there is 25,000 and climbing. |

lamuselivre : Last Raël Hero (Dec 29 2003 22:46 GMT) - Pff ! Vraiment, je suis déçue ! Houellebecq fatigue vraiment beaucoup.

AIDS hits Native Americans (Dec 29 2003 22:45 GMT) - Native Americans, including Arizona's tribes, may be one of the last groups to feel the full force of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The remote, isolated nature of many reservations protected the tribes from the disease for a time. The only cases they saw were people who were infected in urban settings returning home to die. |

Beautiful Day (Dec 29 2003 22:44 GMT) - I've felt this before and I was bound to feel this way again, and so I did. A feeling of complete tranquility, as in there is no pressing matter on my mind, I simply don't care. As with many day preceding this day, what most call today is still a yesterday for me as I've been up straight through out the entire night. I can't say that I was doing anything either, I was simply up for the sake of being awake.Awake I was and so was the northwest weather which translates into an almost non-stop rain. |

Why Howard Dean is making ... (Dec 29 2003 22:44 GMT) - Why Howard Dean is making all the runningSimple: his campaign is MUCH smarter. His team have just released their very own computer game. According to this report, the game simulates the process of getting out the vote in Iowa, including pamphleting, canvasing, placing signs, and moving people to the local precinct to caucus. The game was developed by game designer and theorist Gonzalo Frasca, working with Ian Bogost, as another illustration of news gaming. |

Busness People are Prospering, but Workers are Languishing (Dec 29 2003 22:44 GMT) - The DOW is rising and journalists are happily announcing that business is improving. The business cycle IS on its way up. This means, pundits say, that happy days will soon be here. Yes, they will be here, and have been here, for business owners and corporations. But not for people who work for a living. |

White Males are Pessimistic Republicans (Dec 29 2003 22:44 GMT) - According to today's L.A. Times, white males are preponderantly Republicans. I believe the reason for this is that white males are more pessimistic about themselves and their future than the rest of the population. Pessimistic people tend to be aggressive and confrontational - the basic stance of current day Republicanism.... |

"Ownership Society": Another Name for Laissez Faire (Dec 29 2003 22:44 GMT) - Robert Kuttner notifies us that President Bush in his next state of the union message will advance the idea of an "ownership society." He will encourage all citizens to be "owners" of stock, homes, businesses, health insurance and job skills. Bush plans to create the "ownership society" primarily through tax credits. As with most of his ideas, the "ownership society" will benefit those who pay a lot in taxes - the rich. He is trying to make his laissez faire policy more palatable, but it will not work.... |

Howard Dean, The Optmist (Dec 29 2003 22:44 GMT) - The word is out that the Republicans are going to attack Howard Dean as "reckless, angry and pessimistic." More on Levy's 'New Democrats' (Dec 29 2003 22:43 GMT) - Bob Tarantino agrees with me that Bill Clinton's 'New Democrat' policies were just a co-opting of Republican policies.
