A Really long time. (Dec 30 2003 12:59 GMT) - Stephen Callaghan Tuesday, December 30 2003, 12:59 am So it's been an age since I updated this, so here's what's been happening. 3Com closed (boo), but my job is safe (yey!), but we've moved to Park West beside the Mad Cow (the Red Cow roundabout for those not in the know). One of Irelands traffic blackspots, and if I took the main road (the M50) I would hit the 2 of the biggest traffic jams in Europe (the M50 Toll Bridge is officially the biggest). |

I want my own bed. (Dec 30 2003 12:59 GMT) - Stephen Callaghan Monday, October 20 2003, 04:45 pm After a really bumpy flight I got to Chicago. Took me a while to get the rental car. First time driving on the right, first time in an auto, and I wasn't sure on how to get to the hotel.Talk about a baptism of fire. |

Another long break.... (Dec 30 2003 12:59 GMT) - Stephen Callaghan Thursday, October 9 2003, 01:29 pm OK so I went to Chicago, bought my iPod. It's really really REALLY cool. Much nicer than other ones I've seen, sturdy and the backlight is a cool blue. Getting a car in the near future, all depends when we move office and where we move to but it's looking like a 2000/2001 VW Polo 1L. |

End of Year Thoughts (Dec 30 2003 12:53 GMT) - We had another solid year for theoretical computer science and computational complexity with many exciting results such as the polynomial algorithm for perfect graphs developed in a series of papers by Chudnovsky, Cornuéjols, Liu, Seymour and Vuškovic. We also saw a number of strong papers in derandomization, extractor construction, dimension reduction and many other areas of complexity. In 2003 we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the births of Alonzo Church, Andrey Kolmogorov, John von Neumann and Frank Ramsey, mathematicians who work played a big role in complexity. |

There's a "winter swimming season"? (Dec 30 2003 12:53 GMT) - Although I think that my man, Leonid, is probably a fabulous guy with impeccable table manners, this is not the picture that I wanted to wake up to today. And please tell me that's a piece of a bathing suit or something and not "Little Leonid" sticking out there. Oh god, I feel faint. Sixty-five year-old Leonid does a split as he prepares to swim in the lake in Serebryany Bor Moscow's district as part of the launch of the winter swimming season. (AFP/Yuri Kadobnov |
