See what I have to put up with... (Dec 30 2003 14:59 GMT) - "Canada's gun registry does so work": "While our system might not be perfect, it brings Canada in line with emerging international standards and keeps a path very different from our neighbours to the south, where there are as many guns as people and where more than 10,000 are murdered with guns each year."[10,000 people out of +250,000,000... Don't twice as many people die of "hospital-related diseases" or whatever they're called? [Anyway, thanks to Xavier for the link. |

At Least One Spammer Says He'll Comply with Can-Spam (Dec 30 2003 14:59 GMT) - Experts on both sides of the spam legislation debates have tended to agree only on one thing: the Can-Spam act about to go into effect in two days will not work. But Alan Ralsky, one of the web's biggest spammers - now on a cautious hiatus in preparation for continuing his "marketing" efforts next month - gave hope to the optimists, saying that he will not only comply with the new rules, but also that "You would have to be stupid to try to violate this law." NYT reports. [summary] |

Speed camera revolt! [Peter Wilson] (Dec 30 2003 14:59 GMT) - OK - maybe not a revolte quite yet. Phil Woodford started a thread on new rules concerning term-time absenses. Yet more beauracracy - more cost - and it won't meet it's aims, but I guess will alienate yet more of the population. On a related note I was pleased to read on the font page of the times today that the government is nervous about a backlash by motorists concerning over-zealous use of speed cameras - especially where this appears to primarily be a means of raising funds. Apparently 2 million people paid a £60 fine this year. |

Web TV Co-Founder Dies at 39 (Dec 30 2003 14:58 GMT) - Over the course of his career, Goldman worked on the cusp of technology and consumer electronics at firms such as Apple Computer and Microsoft Corp. The cause of his death may take several weeks to determine, the coroner's office said. In 1995, along with former Apple colleagues Steve Perlman and Bruce Leak, Goldman co-founded WebTV Networks, which allowed users to surf the Internet from their televisions. Microsoft bought WebTV in 1997 for $425 million and today is called MSN TV. Last year, Goldman founded Mailblocks, a Los Altos company that sells a Web-based e-mail system that promises to eliminate unwanted e-mail, or spam. |

Microsoft Notebook: 2004 likely to be pivotal on many fronts (Dec 30 2003 14:58 GMT) - In sports, they call it a rebuilding year, a period when a team works on the fundamentals and prepares for the next season's championship run, doing all it can in the meantime to keep the stadium filled with fans. It might be tempting to think of Microsoft Corp.'s 2004 in those terms, sandwiched as it is between major releases of the company's biggest products. New versions of Microsoft Office and Windows Server debuted in 2003. And the next Windows for PCs, code-named Longhorn, isn't due until 2005 or 2006. |
