Email PKI, Penny Black and XDR Memory (Dec 31 2003 00:46 GMT) - The idea of using one-way functions to produce "email stamps" is not exactly new (Email stamps are bit strings that prove that the sender computed some "hard" computational problem.) Cynthia Dwork and Moni Noar introduced the concept over a decade ago, and recommended their use to combat spam. Dwork is now working for Microsoft at their Silicon Valley research facility, and is one of the principals on the Penny Black project. At the core of the email stamp concept is the requirement that the sender of an email perform some complicated calculation. Ideally one that takes a fair amount of time to compute, but is easy to verify. |
