winter update (Dec 31 2003 01:59 GMT) - It's been a busy, and (for a change) upbeat, winter, so my posting has been very light this past month. Our holidays were very cheerful - we spent Christmas day at Julia's family home, and then the day after with my mother. The gift exchange was more enjoyable for some reason this year, and everyone seemed to appreciate what they got. Julia's father gave me an unexpected ring, one he's worn for years - I guess we're getting married! I've always avoided hand jewelrly because of the ammoutn of keyboard time I log, but the ring fits perfectly and wears easily, so I'm sure it'll become a permanent accoutrement. |

Wish lists for Apple (Dec 31 2003 01:57 GMT) - A Macworld wish list. The writers at the MacDevCenter offer their Macworld wish list today, offering some interesting ideas along the way. My single wish: That Apple work to make its beta testing program more vigorous [Mac Net Journal] I would second this wish, with the further hope that upgrades don't cause a loss of functionality. Over the weekend, I discovered that my recently upgraded G3 laptop (lombard), can no longer play DVD's. |

Apple I: the Mac is amazing (Dec 31 2003 01:57 GMT) - So months after wondering what this integrated "Rip, Mix, Burn" technology in OS X is all about, I finally got around to making a movie -- Mr. Willem's First Christmas. It was astonishingly easy to make. It took a couple hours of shooting with a Sony DV Cam, and then a couple hours editing. Sound directly integrates with iTunes. |

More like the 'huh?' award (Dec 31 2003 01:55 GMT) - MRC's quote of the year: "If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age." |

The Guardian Online Why content isn't king (Dec 31 2003 01:55 GMT) - "Imagine the discussions that must have gone on around the invention of the telephone: a new medium for delivering content directly to households. Indeed, that was exactly how some people did use it. In Budapest you could pick up the telephone and listen to music and news until the first world war... It didn't turn out that way because people preferred listening to each other: |

Happy New Year Flash Files? (Dec 31 2003 01:53 GMT) - I have a little problem here: somehow Google thinks that one of my entries which was titled "Happy New Year" is among the world's most useful hits when it comes to searching for "new year flash". Unfortunately that page is completly boring as it doesn't offer anything useful. More that 1500 people where already looking for e-cards or screensavers or desktop backgrounds on this page. So if you know a good source for those - could you please add them to the comments on that page? |

procrastination (Dec 31 2003 01:51 GMT) - The very things I do so willingly in real life cripple me when they're part of an assignment. While in this incapacitated state the very structure of my brain changes and I am suddenly filled with a sense of euphoric wonderment in the most mundane things. Everything becomes fascinating because fascination is a relative thing. This is why people are able to read a the March 1983 edition of Highlights Magazine when they're in the dentist office (a decent issue, don't misunderstand). Right now I'm late for a deadline, and my agent has been making my phone ring. |

Ideal Social Networking Site (Dec 31 2003 01:48 GMT) - Christopher makes his wish: "My ideal service would have the the multiple professional affiliation features of LinkedIn, but also allow me to show non-professional affilations. It would allow me to form intentional communities like Tribes.Net, but would also let me do a Wiki in addition to a message board. It would have meeting/party invite services like eVite, and blogging features like LiveJournal. |
