It took me a bit to understand (Dec 31 2003 02:45 GMT) - So, as some of you know, I wrote a tempalte engine because I wasn't really happy with any of the ones out there. The just didn't jive with the way my head worked. The one I wrote is pretty decent, if I do say so myself, but now that I've been through that process I can appreciate how engines like Freemarker work. What I wrote works well but I now realize that the View and the Controller (a la MCV) are too tightly integrated. The Controller has to know about the structure of the View in order to produce the Model. |

House Cleaning (Dec 31 2003 02:45 GMT) - It may seem weird that, during the hollidays, I would post less than at other times. This is largely due to the fact that I'm spending a fair amount of time catching up with a number of errands I wanted to finish before year-end. Among those are the regular amount of stuff that piles (emails to answer, people to get together with, etc...) and a lot of cleaning on the TNL.net back-end. |

Football coaching merrygoround: Tice stays, Spurrier goes (Dec 31 2003 02:43 GMT) - Minnesota Vikings owner Red McCombs wondered what all the fuss was about and pointed out that he never said anything less than supportive of head coach Mike Tice. After the way their season ended, you might expect some changes in the defensive coaching staff, so it's probably fortunate that defensive coordinator George O'Leary resigned a couple of weeks ago to take the head coaching job at the University of Central Florida.Surprising no one but confusing many with a non-denial denial that he'd resigned, Steve Spurrier did resign as coach of the Washington Native Americans after two years where pretty much nothing went his way despite mucho dinero for players and facilities provided by baby owner Dan Snyder. Though that moeny apparently also came with plenty of suggestions regarding how Spurrier out to spend it. Not nearly as pleasant an experience as all those years where he was more or less worshipped at that little college down in the Sunshine State. |

William Shatner, The Master (Dec 31 2003 02:43 GMT) - In 1968, William "The Yellow Dart" Shatner released one of my favorite albums, The Transformed Man . Now it looks like he's at it again, this time with help from the likes of Henry Rollins. A name hasn't been announced yet, but I know that I for one can't wait for Shatner's new album |

Life is good again. (Dec 31 2003 02:43 GMT) - I finally received my MA in Hawaiian Language and Literature this month. It was a long haul, but worth it. I'm already thinking Ph.d., and looking at a return to Ireland to do it. |
