Bus. Std: A Tale of Three Platforms (Dec 31 2003 02:27 GMT) - My column in today's Business Standard (ICE World) on the need to construct the next generation of platforms for the telephone network, the PC and the world wide web: The three technology platforms that form the foundation of our digital life today are the telephone network, personal computer and the world wide web. While the legacy of the telephone goes back many decades, the PC and the web are recent creations. They have served us well – today, over 500 million computers are in use across the world, billions of documents on every conceivable topic across the world are no more than a few clicks away and a global telecom network connects people, computers and information. Yet these platforms are now beginning to show their age. |

Weaving The Threads Together (Dec 31 2003 02:25 GMT) - Looks like the ties between al-Qaeda and Iraq are getting a little more certain. U.S. forces operating in the so-called Sunni Triangle -- the region of Iraq most loyal to captured former dictator Saddam Hussein -- found a significant weapons cache that included al Qaeda literature and videotapes, the U.S. |

Give me thy hand. I do begin to have bloody thoughts. (Dec 31 2003 02:25 GMT) - This morning, I was thinking about menstruation. [Wanna guess why?] Anyway, I started wondering about the biological and evolutionary history of menstruation. Most mammals don't menstruate, so why do we? [According to one article, this is a trait human women share with hedgehogs, bats, shrews and elephants, along with about one-ninth of known primate species. |

Today's movie: Me Without You (Dec 31 2003 02:25 GMT) - From 2001, this is a small English movie that mainly comes across as an author's attempt to disgorge the emotional aftermath of a childhood friendship that spoiled. Me Without You was written and directed by Sandra Goldbacher (following up her Minnie Driver debut feature, The Governess), though I could be reading more into this than really ought to be. Mark it down as a character study rather than a story film.Michelle Williams (yes, the blonde from Dawson's Creek) does her best English accent, adds a few pounds and darkens her hair for most of the movie, playing Holly, the slightly mousy next-door neighbor and best friend to Anna Friel, taking the part of the gregarious, daring and not 100% connected to reality Marina. The only other names are Trudy Styler, Mrs. |

We Have The Power To Keep Gwen and Jackson Safe and Happy (Dec 31 2003 02:25 GMT) - We Have The Power To Keep Gwen and Jackson Safe and HappyWe're having a fun Dean House Party watching the DVD that features Howard Dean insisting "You Have the Power" again and again. It's a great message and we have 3 year-old Gwen in her party dress dancing in front of the room and 8 year-old Jackson playing host to her and they are bopping to the music from the DVD. I look at them and I know their lightheartedness is based on our seriousness -- our serious concern with making this a country they can be safe in, a country not bankrupt when they reach the age of majority, a country with the choices we had growing up, to make a sane and successful life for ourselves in America. They deserve that. |

Apple III: one-click to buy = good; 20 clicks and 2 phone calls to return = bad (Dec 31 2003 02:23 GMT) - But alas, the story is not a completely happy one. For in addition to the iMac, I needed a router. At first bought a Belkin router from the Apple site. (By now, I had changed the one-click preferences to ship to my parents, so I was able to buy the Belkin router with one click.) But then seeing that I could get a Belkin wireless router elsewhere (of course, not on the site selling Airports), I tried to cancel the order from Apple. |

I suddenly got a whole ... (Dec 31 2003 02:21 GMT) - I suddenly got a whole bunch of invitations for LinkedIn, a social networking site focussed on bussiness. It's fascinating. I have been wishing for a way to manage my contacts (the people I kinda know and would like to stay in touch with), and this might help. I will report back in a year. |
