Living larger. Paul Boutin on ... (Dec 31 2003 03:45 GMT) - Living larger. Paul Boutin on cutting the cord: If range rather than speed is your issue, buy the discontinued Linksys WSB24 Wireless-B Signal Booster and a Linksys 802.11b base, rather than the new 54G model. I use this setup to cover a 4-story, 21-unit loft building, plus the roof, plus half the block outside (I parked it in front of a 3rd-floor window). |

Canadian firm offers Rs 35b for HBL - Daily Times (Dec 31 2003 03:45 GMT) - "There are many discrepancies in the Habib Bank Ltd (HBL) bidding. The bank’s current market value is over Rs 71 billion, but it has been sold for Rs 22.404 billion. This was said by Maryna (Private) Limited Canada’s country head Rashid Amiruddin at a press conference here on Tuesday. He said the MLC would move the court because it was put out of bidding by raising the 'unreasonable' objection that it was not a serious buyer. |

Lacan.org (Dec 31 2003 03:45 GMT) - This is the Web site of Lacan.org, an umbrella organisation representing the The Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis and the San Francisco Society for Lacanian Studies. The site has a number of interesting aspects, including information about the School and Society (with details of members, publications, seminars, courses etc.). There is also an 'ask an analyst' feature, which allows users to put questions on Lacanian theory and/or practice to a qualified analyst. |

Les mathèmes de Lacan (Dec 31 2003 03:45 GMT) - This Web site is, in effect, a concordance to the work of Jacques Lacan. In the 1950s, Lacan began to produce a series of texts that, rereading Freud in the light of recent developments in linguistics and phenomenology, revolutionised not only psychoanalysis but also many other disciplines in the human sciences. One of Lacan's most controversial strategies was the use of mathematics and diagrams in his theoretical work. Les Mathèmes de Lacan attempts to help the reader of Lacan's frequently difficult texts navigate this mathematical terminology. (Stuart Allen) |

Umbra (Dec 31 2003 03:45 GMT) - This is the Web site of Umbra - a journal devoted to the work of the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. The journal is available by subscription and boasts contributions by a number of leading Lacanians, such as Joan Copjec, Slacoj Zizek and Alain Badiou. Editions have featured the themes of aesthetics and sublimation, identity and identification, the drive, and the thought of Alain Badiou. The site also includes details of courses and events run at the University at Buffalo. These often feature Lacan-inflected film studies seminars, but there are also some on literature and psychoanalytic theory. |

Freud, Dora, Lacan (Dec 31 2003 03:45 GMT) - This Web site contains a complete electronic version Tom Davies' lecture on Lacan. The lecture - in the form of notes as well as more discursive prose - is part of Davies' post-graduate course on the work of the great French psychoanalyst. The lecture deals with Freud's famous case study of 'Dora' - the study that played a major role in the development of the concept of transference. Davies embarks on a discussion of Freud's assessement of Dora, but he then moves on to a fascinating Lacanian account of Freud's reading. (Stuart Allen) |

Monks + Art (Dec 31 2003 03:45 GMT) - Ken Wilber has asked me to contribute a video to his web site. While I am flattered that he asked me, I am also wondering about a "monk" acting as a curator. I mean a monk knows about meditation and even about enlightenment and of course has a personal taste for this or that....but does that a curator make? What do you think LR? |

New Year's Stuff (Dec 31 2003 03:40 GMT) - Okay, so I'm obviously an old fuddy-duddy with a kid, so I won't be heading out on the town tonight by any means, but still, it'll be nice to be here at home for the New Year. On the flip side of that, of course, it'll be the first significant event for Ana since she's been out of Spain... Normally the Spanish spend the evening with their families and eat 12 grapes at the bells of midnight to bring in the New Year. This will be happening at 3 p.m. |

The Saudi Paradox - Foreign Affairs (Dec 31 2003 03:38 GMT) - "Saudi Arabia is in the throes of a crisis, but its elite is bitterly divided on how to escape it. Crown Prince Abdullah leads a camp of liberal reformers seeking rapprochement with the West, while Prince Nayef, the interior minister, sides with an anti-American Wahhabi religious establishment that has much in common with al Qaeda. Abdullah cuts a higher profile abroad -- but at home Nayef casts a longer and darker shadow." |

feeling boxed in (Dec 31 2003 03:38 GMT) - In a situation that feels eerily similar to the tyranny that TiVo used to exert over me--when I was unwilling to give the thumbs down to its suggested programs that I didn't actually hate but didn't really want to watch--I think Amazon.com has intimacy and control issues. Specifically, the Gold Box (also known as "Thom's Gold Box," since Amazon insists on calling me by name every chance it gets, even on other people's web sites, and apparently in an effort to lull me into thinking it's my good pal: "Welcome, Thom." "We have recommendations for you, Thom. |
