feeling boxed in (Dec 31 2003 03:38 GMT) - In a situation that feels eerily similar to the tyranny that TiVo used to exert over me--when I was unwilling to give the thumbs down to its suggested programs that I didn't actually hate but didn't really want to watch--I'm in a dysfunctional relationship with Amazon.com. Specifically, the Gold Box (also known as "Thom's Gold Box," since Amazon insists on calling me by name every chance it gets, even on other people's web sites, and apparently in an effort to lull me into thinking it's my good pal-- "Welcome, Thom." "We have recommendations for you, Thom." "Here's the page you made, Thom. |

Best wishes to lobbyists (Dec 31 2003 03:38 GMT) - It is encouraging that a group of Tucsonans has formed to lobby Congress to increase the federal gasoline tax. The group contends that the tax should be increased to raise money for transportation improvements. There's no doubt the money is needed, particularly here in Pima County where each year traffic woes increase without being adequately addressed. |

Helpline Comment (24922) (Dec 31 2003 03:36 GMT) - Uncreative Lab's domain name contract expired... Damn comment spammers and browser hi-jackers (Dec 31 2003 03:35 GMT) - I've really yet to have too much trouble with comment spamming. I've had my dealings with them before, but my IP ban list keeps most of them at bay. However, I had one that probably would've run rampant on my site had I not locked his IP. If you were on this site about 45 minutes ago, you would've noticed that this post had 90 comments on it. Yes, you read that right. |

How US Manipulates News to Suit Its Interests - Arab News (Dec 31 2003 03:34 GMT) - "The coverage is managed and 'spun' and, when needed, shifted to new topics — positive stories of victories ... Americans and Iraqis continue to die, on a daily basis, but the stories of these deaths no longer generate front-page news coverage. For example, a series of attacks on US forces on Christmas Day resulted in four American deaths. A review of a number of major US daily newspapers found the story on page 39 in one, page 18 in another and not even appearing in another two." |

No new lakes have formed ice safe to fish. (Dec 31 2003 03:33 GMT) - Hamlin Lake by Ludington is still great for bluegills and fisherman are still on the ice. The same lakes that have been safe are still safe but we have not added any to the list. Many of the big lakes that had a skim of ice are wide open again, but the good news is that we have cold weather coming in next week. They are catching steelhead at elk rapids below the dam on wigglers. Curly |
