Site News and Changes (Dec 31 2003 04:52 GMT) - First, many thanks to David @ Better Living Through Blogging for naming this site as part of his Top Five New Blogs! I more than appreciate the honor, and will strive in the coming year to exceed expectations. To celebrate, I've made some enhancements to this site, not the least of which is the addition of article permalinks and trackback. Trackback looked like it would be a bitch to pull off, but was surprisingly easy given the combined power of Movable Type's standalone Trackback and Geeklog's Theme API. All hail Geeklog! |

Attorney General John Ashcroft has withdrawn from the case. The Plame affair is apparently not dead and buried after all. US Deputy Attorney General James Comey gave this explanation as to why Ashcroft withdraws: "The attorney general, in an abundance of caution, believed that his recusal was appropriate, based on the totality of circumstances and the facts in evidence developed at this stage of the investigation. |

The Economist reports and you decide: "In Tehran, Irans capital, more than 1,000km (621 miles) north-west, sclerotic state organs lumbered into action. The Iranian Red Crescent was hindered by the concentration of its stores and people in the quake-prone north. As a result, thousands of survivors in Bam spent two freezing nights without the tents they had been promised. |

A spark to ignite winds of change? (Dec 31 2003 04:47 GMT) - Recently, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher was pushed and shoved by a group of PA Arabs who shouted that he was not welcome when he visited the mosque on the Temple Mount. Responding to this attack, Ibrahim Saada [editor of a leading Egyptian weekly] wrote [an] editorial in Akhbar Elyom on Saturday and stated that, "It is now time to adopt a new attitude toward the Palestinian Authority, to tell them 'No' a thousand times, as we are not as naive as they think." In words addressed to Yassir Arafat, Saada wrote, "Your excellency, the sole spokesman of the Palestinian people, we are fed up with your repetition that any Palestinian act against Egypt, or any Palestinian act - verbal or physical - against an Egyptian official, should be blamed on a trivial, small and banned group." The editorial went on to recall several occasions when Arafat's policies have been directly opposed to those of Egypt. Saada said that after Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981, "his excellency the Palestinian president was the first among those who rejoiced, clapped, and danced. |

Jordanians back up Sharon! (Dec 31 2003 04:47 GMT) - Prince Hassan bin Talal, uncle of Jordan's Kind Abdullah and a former heir to the throne of the Hashemite kingdom, has told an Italian newspaper that he sees Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as a pragmatic man, who wants security for his people, but is unable to find a partner on the Palestinian side with whom to conduct negotiations. In comments published Monday by La Stampa, Prince Hassan said that Arafat is at a transitory stage, but, unfortunately, we can see the growing influence of Hamas and Hezbollah among the Palestinians." Hassan said that there are currently three phobias afflicting the world: anti-Semitism, anti-Arabism and anti-Americanism. This is because the Americans should not be talking about a new world order, but about a new international alliance for peace. |
