Goin bonkers... (Dec 31 2003 05:39 GMT) - I came across this at NPR, No Place Like Home: Building Her Own, the story of a woman who lived in a car for two years to save enough money to buy land and build her own house in the Alaskan wilderness. Though by the time I consider this option, I should be financially stable, and I think I'd build my place a little bigger than 12x12, this sounds rather exciting. I'm tellin yah, when I get my pilot's license I'm gonna buy a small pontoon plane so I can fly around Alaska :) |

greene thumb up (Dec 31 2003 05:39 GMT) - When PBS ran the NOVA "The Elegant Universe" series a few months ago, I missed the first episode but managed to TiVo the second. Since then I'd been waiting for the programs to be re-run, and tonight TiVo picked them up for me. In addition to my longtime fascination with quantum theory, chaos theory and astrophysics, there's also just something about the series narrator and expert on superstring theory, Columbia University mathematics and physics professor Brian Greene, that I've always found really adorable and intriguing. Recently, though, I was stunned to discover that he and I were undergraduates together, both part of the class of 1984. I pulled out my senior yearbook, and there he was. |

Ready? Set? Burn! (And Google-bait defined) (Dec 31 2003 05:37 GMT) - As you may recall, my favorite boy toy Kevin (no offense, Trey) was gracious enough to cover my damn-near-perfect ass by guest blogging for me during my hiatus (while said damn-near-perfect ass recovered from a mighty blow to the tailbone ... and, yes, I'm Google-baiting*, what about it?) Anyway, were it not for Kevin's generosity with his time and thoughts, he would never have gotten away with saying that I only now found a Bonfire-worthy post. After 3,742 of these suckers in 9 months, I assure you that I have an abundance of posts worthy to be thrown upon a pyre and burned to oblivion. Oh, and I don't like German tourists, either. |

Where is my Made for Linux Machine (Dec 31 2003 05:34 GMT) - 31 Dec 2003: When the technology community considers Linux, we know what sets it apart from the competition. But if you were to ask the average consumer, few could give you a legitimate answer other than maybe it doesnt cost anything. (However there will always be those that look in vain for the free beer everyone keeps talking about.) Editorial contributor Doug Dingus offered the following opinion piece to osViews which proposes some interesting ideas to help differentiate Linux to consumers by way of... |

Home Networking (Dec 31 2003 05:34 GMT) - 31 Dec 2003: The FreeBSD Diary walks us through building a home network."I have recently finished setting up my old network in a new location. I now have network connections available at 5 locations throughout my new home. Using the same type of rack as I had before, I was able to improve the layout and tidy things up by using some new tools. |

Dual G5 Versus Dual Opteron (Dec 31 2003 05:34 GMT) - 31 Dec 2003: Barefeats compares a dual G5 system and dual Opteron system."After 4 months of begging, Xicomputer finally let me test a Dual 2GHz Opteron system. There's been a lot of interest from readers regarding the Opteron since it's the only other 64 bit desktop computer besides the G5. Since they both are clocked at 2GHz, I thought it would make an interesting article. |
