Progress (Dec 31 2003 05:31 GMT) - It's a sign of progress that I don't race to answer the phone when it rings. It's a sign of progress that missing a phone call, and no message left, doesn't panic me. One of these days, I'll get so the phone won't wake me up if I'm in a sleep cycle. And that will be a sign of progress too. |

Muscle cuts are mad-cow safe? Bull! (Dec 31 2003 05:31 GMT) - Muscle cuts are mad-cow safe? Bull! (via faisal) Hmm, maybe that "boneless steaks are safe" business wasn't quite on the mark after all. US beef safe to eat? Sure - if it is organic beef from cows that were not raised on feed but grazed on grass, and slaughtered conscious, not stunned. |

Reckless Hate And Nonsense (Dec 31 2003 05:30 GMT) - From the War And Peace department: What can men do against such reckless hate? On the one hand, Dennis Prager highlights the fact that Iran has refused assistance from Israel after the devastating earthquakes that have struck their country. This is not the fantasy of a columnist, but is well-supported by other links, from Israel's initial offer of assistance to Iran's refusal, to the stubborn refusal of some Israelis to give up, as they try to sneak aid into Iran. The specific quote was apparently, "The Islamic Republic of Iran accepts all kinds of humanitarian aid from all countries and international organizations with the exception of the Zionist regime," from a spokesman for Iran's Interior Ministry. |

Cold mornings (Dec 31 2003 05:25 GMT) - 17 degrees F this morning, brrr. Colder even than yesterday, when L. and I went to the Chihuahuan Desert Garden on campus, and found that the fountain there had frozen and made a fascinating ice sculpture. Even though it tends to encourage her to be disobedient later on in the day, we've been letting the dog get under the covers with us after we let out of her crate in the morning. She immediately burrows down towards our feet--apparently chihuahuas and chihuahua-mix dogs are known for this "mole-y" quality. |

Boosting Mobility and Freedom (Dec 31 2003 05:22 GMT) - Yan Venter is an acclaimed author and international evangelist, ordained by both the Southern Baptist and Assemblies of God denominations. On a recent flight, he witnessed a fellow traveler typing into a Palm Portable Keyboard and a Palm Powered handheld computer. The very next day, Yan was the proud owner of a Palm m505 handheld and a Palm Portable Keyboard. He quickly began using the device's built-in Memo Pad software for writing his sermon notes and chapters to his books. The main challenge left to handle was how to easily get this content from the Memo Pad to MS Word on his PC. |
