May God be restored to the British Isles (Dec 31 2003 14:08 GMT) - Rabbi Boteach blames Godless Anglican leaders for moral confusion : "A year in which a former baseball-owner-turned-presiden of the United States emerged as the greatest man alive by expending treasure, lives and risking all his political capital to cross the world and save 24 million people from the killing machines of a tyrant. If George Bush never wins another election, if he indeed never passes another piece of legislation, I will still remember him as one of my greatest sources of religious inspiration for teaching me to what lengths a human being must go in order to save human life. "And even in the worst case scenario, if he went to Iraq insincerely -- if he did it to enrich the executives of Halliburton, or to avenge his father's honor, or because America needs Iraq's oil -- I would rather have an insincere politician who saves lives rather than ostensibly God-fearing church leaders who do nothing to stop the murder of their human brethren." |

The Fish That Threatened Pittsburgh (Dec 31 2003 14:07 GMT) - The following tale from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, passed along by reader Sandy Smith, is the latest in a growing litany of odd encounters with the Transportation Security Administration. Our story thus far: The author, a college student flying home to Pittsburgh from NYC for the holidays, has arrived at LaGuardia airport: I wasn't prepared, however, for the TSA to stop me right at the entrance, proclaiming that no small pets, including fish, were permitted through security. I had, however, just received the blessing of the ticket agents at US Airways and pre-assured MJ's travels with Pittsburgh International Airport security weeks before our travel date. |

Online tools for studying history (Dec 31 2003 14:07 GMT) - The Calgary Herald and CanWest News Service are publishing a five-part series, Future Past, on how scholars are using the internet to study history. From Randy Boswell's review in yesterday's Calgary Herald: "Underlying the project is a new sensibility about how the Internet -- with its global reach, open access, powerful search engines and exhaustive data sets -- is reshaping scholarly research." |

New year resolutions (Dec 31 2003 14:06 GMT) - In my copious spare time in 2004 I will:write (or at least make a very big hole in) a science novel about the relationship between computing, language and creativity.write (or at least make a very big hole in) a non-fiction book challenging some of the self-serving mores of the IT industry as constituted at the start of the 21st century.I also undertake to get my hair cut more often, eat less fatty food and chew my way more quickly towards what is, at this stage, a brobdingnagian backlist of books and interesting URLs. |

The End of the Oil ... (Dec 31 2003 14:06 GMT) - The End of the Oil Age Richard Heinberg writes: The atrocities of September 11, 2001 so dominated world news, politics, military affairs, and the economy that popular discussion soon divided all of recent history into two categories: "pre-9/11" and "post-9/11." For most Americans, the events were not only horrifying, but entirely unexpected. The Bush administration's response to the 9/11 attacks was to bomb Afghanistan, remove the Taliban regime from power, and install a compliant interim client government. |
