Coalescent (Dec 31 2003 14:39 GMT) - I just finished Stephen Baxter's Coalescent. I really enjoyed the book and it sort of restored my faith in SF. I had a really bad experience with the last book I read, Charles Stross' Singularity Sky. I love every thing Stross has written to this point and have always searched for all his stuff. |

Blogspam -- the latest form ... (Dec 31 2003 14:35 GMT) - Blogspam -- the latest form of pollutionThe News Group system -- which was the glory of the early Internet -- was undermined by spam and flaming. Blogging seemed to be a way of overcoming that, because Bloggers retained complete control of their space. But then (for the very best of reasons -- to encourage conversation and discussion) some Bloggers started to allow readers to comment on their posts. You can guess what's happened -- Blogs are beginning to suffer from comment spamming. See this thoughtful posting on the problem by Simpson Garfinkel -- plus some helpful comments from people who've been tackling the problem. |

So Long SteveAh, Steve, you ... (Dec 31 2003 14:35 GMT) - So Long SteveAh, Steve, you sonofabitch, for the second time in two years you had the city cheering. The first time we cheered was when you abruptly left the University of Florida after winning yet another championship, and signed the most lucrative coaching deal ever (5 mil a year!) to head the Washington Redskins. We were all real excited. You said you were gonna prove that your style of football - the fun and gun - would work in the NFL, and you were gonna teach those old dogs some new tricks. |

iPOD BATTERY FIX (Dec 31 2003 14:34 GMT) - Appleturns: "Several people who had lost most of their battery capacity got it back after doing a restore of their iPods to the new firmware version. It seemed to work for some people and not for others, but after a bit of research, it seemed that most people had luck if they performed the restore after letting their iPod battery discharge to the point where it was completely and totally dead - meaning, there wasn't even enough charge left to display the battery warning icon when a button was pushed." Read here what Apple didn't tell you to keep your iPod tiptop. Apple is becoming a secret society, and the members/users must show their allegiance to Apple by solving mysteries. |
