Opinion: FASB Keeps Getting It Wrong (Dec 31 2003 17:48 GMT)

- Excerpt: "[T]he viability of our country's young startup companies is being compromised by recent actions taken by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). True 'Market Timers' Upset About Mutual Fund Trading Scandal, Too (Dec 31 2003 17:48 GMT)

But hold on a minute.... [Some investment managers] believe that by shifting money among different types of investments-- bonds, stocks, cash, real estate, gold-- they can avoid market downturns. That kind of strategy is what 'market timing' used to mean ...

An Operation to Ease Back Pain Bolsters the Bottom Line, Too, At Least for Payees (Dec 31 2003 17:48 GMT)

- Excerpt: "In the absence of better data, critics in the field point to a different reason for the fusion operation's fast rise: money. Medicare can pay a surgeon as much as four times more for a spinal fusion, some doctors say, as for a laminectomy ... Doctors and hospitals are not the only players with a financial stake in fusion operations.

Evangelical Blog? (Dec 31 2003 17:46 GMT)

- Ever noticed how much of writing is devoted to categories? We've got mysteries, and science fiction, and fantasy, and romance, and then even sub-categories like detective fantasies and horror-based detectives and literary sci-fi and so on ad nauseum. Many writers get a tad bit irritated at being lumped into a category: for example, even though the editors of Best American Mystery Stories 2003 tried to define "mystery" stories broadly enough that almost any crime-related fiction could qualify, at least one writer refused to be included in the anthology because he didn't want to be characterized as a "mystery" writer. What does all this have to do with the title of this post, you might ask?
