BSE Nonsense (Dec 31 2003 17:30 GMT) - This was written as a response to this article. I put a fair amount of time into it, so I figured it would be worth re-posting here. What a load of pseudoscientific garbage. Before I start addressing specific errors and spin, I'd like to suggest that anyone interested in this topic read Richard Rhodes's Deadly Feasts, in which the real science regarding BSE and vCJD is described in painstaking detail. That said, on with the show... |

Nope, no bias to see here... (Dec 31 2003 17:29 GMT) - Goodbye, 2003. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. President Bush invaded Iraq after saying Baghdad had weapons of mass destruction, which it didn't, links to al-Qaida, which were never proved, and a hankering for uranium from Africa, which wasn't true. Who's... |

End-of-Year Errata (Dec 31 2003 17:29 GMT) - Thanks to those who pointed out the mysterious, unsightly PHP errors that suddenly started appearing all over Subtraction.com this week. I went back through and fixed all the code (I think) so everything should be more or less back to normal. |

6 or 7 Years (Dec 31 2003 17:28 GMT) - It can't be six years since Kari was in DC as six years ago it was 1997. A time when me and her were an item, and I was in Washington DC that year. Maybe for the better we never hooked up there, too. I was 19 going 20, she was 14. And Marion Barry snort wouldn't snort have snort approved. |

Linux, open source, and other tech news coverage in 2004 (Dec 31 2003 17:28 GMT) - Rather than try to make the usual sweeping predictions about what the future holds for the computer hardware and software industries or even just for Linux and open source, I'm going to make some predictions about how tech news will be covered in the next year. Let's start by saying a minimum of 5000 articles (give or take 4900) will be written in 2004 declaring Linux "finally ready for the desktop," up from 3000 (give or take 2900) similar articles in 2003. |

Gay Palestinians seek refuge in Israel (Dec 31 2003 17:27 GMT) - "Tricked out in drag or the tight, modish attire of Western urban youth, dozens of gay Palestinian runaways eke out a dangerous living on Israel's streets. For these gay men, life in the seedy parts of central Israel is far better than the virtual death sentences they fled in the West Bank and Gaza Strip." |

The Fish That Threatened Pittsburgh. ... (Dec 31 2003 17:27 GMT) - The Fish That Threatened Pittsburgh. The following tale from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, passed along by reader Sandy Smith, is the latest in a growing litany of odd encounters with the Transportation Security Administration. Our story thus far: The author, a college student flying home to Pittsburgh from NYC for the holidays, has arrived at LaGuardia airport: I wasn't prepared, however, for the TSA to stop me right at the entrance, proclaiming that no small pets, including fish, were permitted through security. |
