The Coffin Stone (Fieldnotes by Jane) (Dec 31 2003 18:46 GMT) - In a large field opposite Little Kit's Coty lies the natural outcrop of the Coffin Stone. We could see it clearly, but it was right in the middle of a crop of developing brassicas and we walked as far along the field edge as we could, but the light was fading fast and despite attempts I failed to get a decent photo of it. However, even from the distance from which we viewed it, it looked monumentally huge. |

The Countless Stones (Fieldnotes by Jane) (Dec 31 2003 18:45 GMT) - The sign says twenty. Moth counted n-n-n-nineteen. Countless? I think not, baby puppy. Whatever the number they're certainly countable, though you have to have a very lively imagination to reconstruct in your mind the fabulous monument that this once was. |

Kit's Coty (Fieldnotes by Jane) (Dec 31 2003 18:44 GMT) - Parking precariously in the recommended spot, we squidged the 200 metres up the muddy sunken path to the top of the hill and there it was - looking as cute as a puppy dog's nose. With great views over the Medway valley, in spite of the murky weather, this little construction is rudely caged, with a fuck-off spiky fence reminding me of a fluffy chinchilla sitting inside razor wire. But look closely and you see why. The interior portal stone has been a honey pot to the graffiti bees. Mostly delicately ... |

Arise, Sir Tim (Dec 31 2003 18:43 GMT) - Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the web and director of the W3C, is to be knighted in recognition of his services to the global development of the Internet. Considering his achievements, Tim's an exceptionally modest man. He responded to the knighthood by commenting on what can happen to ordinary people who work on things that happen to work out, like the web. Congratulations, Tim, it's well deserved. I was expecting a knighthood in recognition of my services to whiskey drinking, but there's always next year. |

Best and Worst of 2003 (Dec 31 2003 18:42 GMT) - I suppose I should have my own list of best and worst things for 2003. I haven't thought that deeply about the subject, so this is an off-the-cuff list Most over-hyped technology of 2003 Web Services What will be the most over-hyped technology of 2004 Web Services and .NET Biggest waste of tech effort in 2003 The Atom effort Best emerging technology of 2003 News Aggregators Worst technology news of 2003 The SCO lawsuit Best technology news of 2003 The slow realization that dynamic languages make a difference Sleeper Event of 2003 The emergence of blogs as guerilla marketing Like I said, it's an off the cuff list - not that organized, just a bunch of stuff that floats to the top at the moment. One of the interesting things for me has been how my workflow has changed over the last year. I'm traveling less often, but on longer trips when I do travel. |
