The Recovery that Isn't: Take 2 (Dec 31 2003 19:03 GMT) - Paul Krugman strikes again, with his usual precision, cutting through the administration and media's BS about the state of the economy: It was a merry Christmas for Sharper Image and Neiman Marcus, which reported big sales increases over last year's holiday season. It was considerably less cheery at Wal-Mart and other low-priced chains. We don't know the final sales figures yet, but it's clear that high-end stores did very well, while stores catering to middle- and low-income families... |

CBS pays Jacko for interview (Dec 31 2003 19:03 GMT) - In general, I couldn't care less about the Michael Jackson circus, except to hope that all of the children involved are given the necessary protection/justice that the situation demands. But I couldn't let pass this New York Times story that says more about the state of the "news" media in this country than it does about Mr. Jackson or the judicial entanglements in which he finds himself. To quote from the article: Michael Jackson struck a deal with CBS to be paid in effect... |

Life under Orange Alert (Dec 31 2003 19:02 GMT) - We're at Orange Alert, but does that mean anything? Secretary Ridge has been telling people to go about their business normally, but is it prudent? House National Security Subcommittee Chairman Congressman Christopher Shays says he would avoid New York City's Times Square and flights from Europe to America this New Year's. I think he's right on the money. Until DHS stops saying people need to be prepared, vigilant, and aware of the threat level, it only makes sense that people will take it into account when planning activities. |

open thread: Friends of Dean (Dec 31 2003 19:01 GMT) - I think Dana has taken more than enough heat in the comment threads for his post below - I'd like to try and swing the topic 180 degrees. Who in the media has been the most fair (note: not obseqious) to Dean? Virtually the entire staff at The American Pro |

Generally Excellent (Dec 31 2003 19:01 GMT) - The Prospect won the Utne Independent Press Award for general excellence in a magazine, while the slackers at The Nation had to settle for best political coverage. It's a bit hard to see, though, how their political coverage could be... |

The Marquess Takes it to the Rim: a short story by morland (Dec 31 2003 19:01 GMT) - Ewart Cecil-Humely, the 7th Marquess of Dorset, opened his survival tin to discover his rations had dwindled to hardtack, salted... Ewart Cecil-Humely, the 7th Marquess of Dorset, opened his survival tin to discover his rations had dwindled to hardtack, salted pork, and taffy. A grim look clouded his face. Squandering the venison had been a mistake. Disgusted, he tossed the tin back in his satchel, and returned to reconnoitering the sandy mound ahead, barren save for patches of dune wildrye and a singular bracket fern. |

My conference topic (Dec 31 2003 19:00 GMT) - I've decided "Blogging" isn't sexy enough, so I'm titling my talk as follows: "The Future Doesn't Need Us: Weblogs and the End of Editing as We've Known It." Now, to get busy amassing facts to back up my conclusion. Assistance along these lines is welcome. |

Near New Year (Dec 31 2003 19:00 GMT) - And here's to 2004. If you think it's looking a little blank around here, you should try Interconnected. There seem to have been a large number of death-rattling computers recently. Worryingly, given that I'm trying to work at home this week, my PC is slowly losing contact with its hard drive. It's like a car on a cold morning; |

Review of 2003: July and August (Dec 31 2003 19:00 GMT) - Did we ever, truly, determine if the documents were sexed up or find those WMD? In July I came back to my transportation topic from earlier in the year. Even now, six months on, little has changed. Online, Netscape died... |

High Resolution GPS Navigation (Dec 31 2003 19:00 GMT) - "To end the year on a high-note, here's an article that looks into what VGA (640x480 resolution) can bring to GPS Assisted Navigation, in portrait and landscape modes, both on-road and off-road! This preview is made possible by the "early" release of a VGA PocketPC by Toshiba and the skills of a programmer who's found a way to unleash the full potential of this PocketPC. Side-by-side comparisons and animated .gif's tell an interesting story..." |
