2003 In Review (Dec 31 2003 19:23 GMT) - From the Looking Back, Looking Forward department: I started 2003 with minor outpatient surgery scheduled to soak up my 2003 medical deductible and enjoying Apple's new web browser, Safari. I'm ending 2003 fighting with my insurance company over that very same deductible and contemplating another web browser switch, this time to Firebird, a browser I swtiched to last week on Windows. At the beginning of 2003 I completely severed my mental association with conservatives in general and the Republican party specifically, considering myself truly an outsider, but I'm ending 2003 defending the major policies of President Bush and planning on voting for him in 2004. Still, I'm no Republican, and any sufficiently pro-war candidate has a chance with me. |

The PSNI Threat (Dec 31 2003 19:22 GMT) - Anthony McIntyreMartin Salter, a British Labour MP, a couple of years past posed the question, what on earth has happened to the early 1970 radicals like myself who have found themselves in Parliament 25 years later. Have we sold out - or simply grown up? An interesting question, and one that should be considered by any 1970s radical considering embracing all the things their radicalism once pitted them against. But the force of the question was blunted by the answer it only half sought to disguise. Suggesting a maturation attained by simply growing up is yet another self-justificatory discourse aimed at alienating alternative voices by ascribing to them the characteristics of infantilism. |

Republican Sensibility (Dec 31 2003 19:21 GMT) - OK, the day after I bash the Republicans, the Congress manages to do something sensible: The House is looking to ban government from using the Brady Bill background checks to create databases of legal gun owners. The Clinton Adminstration started the practice outside the language of the Brady Bill gun control law, John Ashcroft failed to act to end it, and now the Republican Congress is looking to do it for them. Nicely done, Speaker Hastert, Congressman Delay, and company. |

DNS Problems (Dec 31 2003 19:20 GMT) - Blogger.con and Blogspot.com are not addressable for lots of people because of a DNS snafu. (DNS are the computers that tell your computer what number to go to when you put in a name.) The fix has been pushed, but it could take a while to refresh everywhere. |
